Erin is a private investigator who has been contacted to investigate mysterious deaths in a town called Wolf River. The local sheriff's department has ruled the cause of death to be bear attacks, but judging by the reaction of some of the locals, that's not the truth. The minute Erin met Alex, they shared a mutual attraction and extremely strong pull towards each other. It's obvious that Alex is a loner and stays to himself, but once Erin discovers that he lived through a bear attack, she's convinced he can help her. Erin is determined to find out what is really happening in the secretive small town, no matter the cost.
Alex wants Erin more than he's ever wanted anyone of anything. He constantly has to fight the urge to go to her. Alex knows he's a danger to Erin and is more worried about her protection than his happiness. He soon learns there are more secrets in Wolf River than even he knew existed.
Alex is a great leading male character - hot, vulnerable, protective and dominating. He worried more about Erin than himself constantly and I fell for him immediately. I liked Erin's character well enough, although she was a bit too aggressive and stubborn on a couple of occasions which was annoying. I'm all for strong females, but common sense and realistic instinct shouldn't be overlooked. I liked the overall storyline and enjoyed the mystery that was slowly solved.
The description for Wolf states that it's a standalone book and although it ends in a good place, it ends in a place where it would be really easy to extend the story and give us more. Plus, it's listed as book 1 in the Wolf River series. Can't wait to see what happens next.
This is the 1st in the series and I can not wait to find out more about the secrets of the town of Wolf River.
What's interesting and different about this story is that Alex is a werewolf. Now we're not talking about that he turns into a cuddly wolf but is still alpha, this is not a shifter book. He has 2 personalities. It's like Jekyll and Hyde and I LOVED that! He argues with his wolf all the time and his wolf is hard to control.
Erin is an investigator who used to be a detective and was hired to investigate some murders that were said to be by bears. There's mystery and suspense and romance and hot loving that you're on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what the hell is going on, who is the bad guy, and what secrets are going to be revealed and if Alex and Erin will be able to have their HEA. It's not a cliffhanger per se but it did leave me a bit anxious for the next book.
All I'm saying is that you need to read this story!
Will be putting more of Ms. Angelini's stories in my TBR pile.
