Quality: This Woodbridge toilet arrived in good condition. When unpacked it was intact. It was an attractive toilet. It flushed.
Difficulty of Installation: The installation required two plumbers due to the difficulty in accessing the hold-down bolts that hold the toilet to floor and wax toilet seal.
Operation: Watching the toilet flush, it did not appear to me that it was sending the same amount of water down the drain as do our other two 1.6 gallon toilets.
Problems. Sometime near the end of September the Woodbridge toilet was clogged. We called a plumber who determined that the line was plugged. They pulled the toilet for a drain cleaner to clear the clog.
Woodbridge Customer Service: I called them after the clog to ask for their help. The service was, in my opinion, poor. The message I received from the Woodbridge customer service rep was essentially (to paraphrase) "Whatever the problem is it's either your fault, you flushed something down you shouldn't have. Or, the fault is the plumbers. They either installed it incorrectly, or accidentally got construction debris down the pipe."
When the plumbers came and removed the Woodbridge toilet, it was clear that they had installed the toilet correctly. The drain cleaner reported to me that to the best of his ability, he was unable to find any construction debris in the clog. The clog was caused by toilet paper and "solid waste." The Woodbridge customer service rep was wrong.
I spoke to a plumber and two drain cleaners. All three said that the Woodbridge toilet was not sending enough water down the drain to send the solid waste all the way to the main drain to the street. The toilet paper and poop simply accumulated in the drain pipe until enough had piled up clog the drain.
$ 55 return and restocking fee to return Woodbridge toilet.
$145 to have the drain cleaned
$800 for 3 plumber visits, purchase and installation of new toilet.
TOTAL COST: $1,000 +/-
The cause of the problem: the Woodbridge toilet.
CONCLUSION: The Woodbridge toilet is attractive and well made. As a low flush toilet it should be installed only when the drain pipe length is very short. Regardless, be prepared for clogs and calls to the drain cleaner service. I found their customer service to be poor. The possible causes raised by the Woodbridge rep for my problem proved to be wrong.
The Woodbridge toilet simply did not send enough water down the drain to send our toilet paper and poop all the way to the main drain. (This drain pipe does have the longest run of any drain pipe in our house.) This was not only my conclusion, but also the professional opinions of two professional plumbers and a professional drain cleaner.
RECOMMENDATION: Let the buyer beware. If a Woodbridge is installed at any significance distance at all from your main drain be prepared for clogged toilets and clogged drains. It is also difficult to installed. Our plumber had to call in a second plumber to correctly install the Woodbridge. If you do buy one and experience problems, based on my experience, don't expect any help from the Woodbridge customer service.
I will never buy another Woodbridge product again.
The cons- installation is not easy as a result of the design. The installation bolts are only accessible from the back of the toilet, which makes lining it up for installation EXTREMELY difficult, and makes tightening the bolts without a ratchet impossible. I was able to do it by myself but would have benefited from another set of hands. The toilet is heavy and you don't want to mess up your wax ring. Considering you only need to install it once, it's not a deal breaker but just prepare yourself.
YES, it is more difficult to install than a standard toilet. The one-piece design adds some weight and the clean look everyone likes means the bolt holes are hidden, so it requires some patience and non-standard methods to install. Contrary to what others are saying, it doesn't REQUIRE two people to install, but it makes it easier. I did it myself, but if you're willing to pay two people to install it - go for it.
Like other things in life, if you want and like the look of unique things, they come at a cost. In this case the cost is a little more difficult installation, but for an experienced person it wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. Even though this is a comfort-height toilet (which makes the seat about 3 or so inches higher than a standard toilet), the low profile tank where the flusher buttons are is only 28" above the floor. A standard toilets tank is about 32" high. Some people complained that the toilet seat blocked access to the flusher making you have to reach over it to flush (decide whether that's a deal-breaker for you). The next complaint I noticed was regarding the lower water level. Now, it seems there are still people replacing old toilets who were accustomed to the large and higher water footprint common in older toilets. I personally haven't seen those models for decades. Most manufactures have a lower water level due to the mandated water limits, so I can only think that those complaints were the result of older toilets being replaced. The thing to remeber is ALL toilets cannot utilize more than 1.6 gallons per flush. The styles of different toilets can make water levels appear differently, but the volume per flush is the same. Lastly, I now realize why some reviews mentioned the flushes didn't appear to be using enough water. Older, single-lever standard flushers only need to be depressed briefly and that action would hold open the valve even after being released. Like many two-button toilets, you need to HOLD the button until all the water is released (a few seconds). That ensures the full amount of water for the button selected is released. I have a different brand, two-button toilet in our master bath and the buttons also need to be held.
Now I'll review some of the installation details for those that are interested. The one-piece design means it's a little heavier than a standard toilet which adds to the additional difficulty factor. The hardest part was making sure you lined up the bolt holes with the flange bolts, since you only get one shot at it once the wax ring is is in-place. I did it by using some pieces of scrap wood flooring to suspend it above the bolts to make sure it's lined up before setting it. The bolts are obviously hidden, so access to them is only from the rear and it requires a bit of contorting. Once it was set, I found it easier to reach the bolts from the opposite side of the toilet (to tighten the left bolt, reach around from the right side of the toilet and vice versa). They give you a plastic tool to tighten the bolts - Save it! (I kept mine in the hollow space where the bolts are).
I have one suggestion you should consider before installing the toilet: To fully capture the true clean look, I would make sure to relocate your supply valve to somewhere within the 14-1/2" footprint of the toilet, so it is out of view. I moved mine to the right side of the flange when looking at the toilet, about 6" from center of the flange. I positioned it so the valve is completely out of view. If you're installing this and are handy, this bit of extra effort makes for a clean, visually appealing installation. I know, it's a toilet...but details are everything. To me it didn't make sense to install a smooth-sided toilet with hidden bolts and have the supply valve and hose in plain sight. That's just how I am - if I do something, I do it right.
Overall, my wife picked this toilet for our half-bath renovation. It's unique-looking, easy to clean and was priced the same as the other mainstream brands. I did some research and knew what to expect going in. It looks great and works fine so far. If you like the looks, just find the right person to install it or if you do it your self, plan and prepare a bit and it will go fine.
NOTE: I purchased this item on Amazon for full price and have no affiliation to the seller. I try to write helpful, unbiased and insightful reviews because I also read reviews prior to making my own buying decisions. I notice many reviews lack helpful information, are not well written or give poor reviews based on not reading directions, inexperience or failing to read the product details prior to purchasing. Writing valuable reviews helps pay it forward.
