I have a 52" x 28" standing desk which I use for work, but also as a work surface for various hobbies and tasks; including watchmaking, soldering, electronics, knife sharpening, and other tasks. The desk has a black, woodgrain veneer and is good looking, but not ideal as a workstation.The black surface offers no visibility for small parts resting on top of it. I also don't want to expose it to moisture, heat, or cut on it. Also, a small part that hits the cutting mat won't bounce off and be lost forever.The surface is comfortable as far as your hands touching it to work on. I'm using the blue side because I think it looks better. I've done a little cutting on it and the mark was barely visible, though I can't speak to the "self healing" properties of the mat. It does haver 1 inch marking on it, which are farther broken down to 1/4" markings on one side and 1/8" on the other. I measured them and they seem accurate, but if I'm going to measure something I would use a real device and not my table. I'm sure it's fine for textiles however. I also have my keyboard and mouse on it and use it as a tracking pad.The cost was $42.90 + tax. Most are priced $30- $43 for a 24" x 36" mat, so it is at the top of the range.I would go back and purchase it again.I should mention that it does slide around a little on the desk surface, so you may need to secure it.I should also mention that it came in a large, flat box and was not bent or rolled in any way. This is important!

It may be counterintuitive for most consumers but a mat’s thickness alone does not reflect its durability. The softer top layer of the Worklion Cutting Mat is so soft it is easily marred by heavy cuts, particularly curved cuts that “heal” to the touch but are forever visible on the surface. Name brand cutting mats that are half the thickness of this mat but with a higher density cutting surface withstand years of regular heavy use without losing the smoothness of the top layer. The Worklion 24”x36” Cutting Mat is certainly very well-priced for its combination of heft, durability and functionality. It’s a reliable option for budget-conscious consumers who require a big cutting mat that can faithfully withstand the rigors imposed by rotary cutters or mat knives.
