Like Senator Colbeck and his wife Angie, I too, am a late comer to understanding government and civics. So sad that schools teach progressive ideologies and very little actual civics. As an outsider,once he woke to the founding principles of America-he was on fire to learn more and felt called to DO more. He explains:
–the purpose of govt: To secure the rights of the governed;
–that all powers NOT listed in the constitution and bill of rights belong to the state;
–the Dec of Indep "clearly delineates the source of our rights as our Creator";
–He breaks down the language "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" and notes that the RIGHT TO LIFE is the first delineated;
–He explains that America is exceptional BECAUSE of our right to Liberty which is why people want to immigrate IN not out. He goes on to tell us that Liberty and pursuing our "own unique, individual dreams" makes America the land of "opportunity, not oppression";
–He provides many quotes from founders that back up and support our founding documents "Our Constitution was made only for moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other" ~John Adams;
–He supports the importance of 1A and 2A , the complications with 9,10A and why American Law and Sharia can not possibly co-exist;
–He explains that the Right to Life (as a right from our Creator) is essential to ALL including the pre-born;
–He delves into how many in office take an oath on a constitution they don't even read or understand and are not in politics necessarily for "the people" but for self interests (hence, the Swamp);
–He explains that if we don't know our rights, can't defend why we have them that inevitably-we're at risk for losing them WHICH IS WHY THIS BOOK IS CRITICAL TO ALL OF US ESPEC. OUR YOUTH.
He goes on to some of the policies and legislation he has created and supported and how that relates to his understanding of liberty.
His book was easy to read, easy to understand and a very important refresher on Civics. You can bet that my 16 yo will be reading this book. Civics should be required for all Americans-it certainly is for those who legally immigrate. How can we have unity if we don't understand American Exceptionalism? Why don't we have unity as Americans today? Because our kids are being lied to through public education.
As I've read through some of the reviews, its pretty evident that the negative reviewers have not read the book, have not taken the time to understand our founding documents and most likely are not pro-America. Sad but obvious. Take time to enjoy a history update by reading this book. You'll be so glad you did.

About the Author
Patrick Colbeck is currently serving his second term as the state senator for Michigan’s Seventh District and also is a 2018 candidate to be Michigan’s next governor. A University of Michigan graduate with bachelor's and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering, Colbeck is best known for his leadership in making Michigan a Right to Work state, his nationally recognized free-market health-care solutions and engineering-based solutions to the most vexing problems faced by government. He lives with his wife, Angie, in Canton, Michigan.

As a citizen of Mr. Colbeck's Senate district, I purchased this book in hopes of better understanding what makes him tick. The book is part brief biography, faith proclamation, state government technical manual, stories of the sausage making process inside the Michigan legislature, and of course, political platform statement for his gubernatorial bid. If you have a particular interest in any of these topics, no reason not to buy the book. However, I found the repeated whining about his relationship with colleagues in the senate, as if repetition adds credibility to his view, to grow tedious. Also, critical thinking and fact checking on the part of the reader are a necessity. I've corresponded with Mr. Colbeck's office in real time on a number of the issues discussed in the book. On P.146 he retells the story of an editorial he wrote criticizing administrative expenses of one of the public school districts in his Senate district. I fact-checked the editorial at the time, and sent him what I found. The state's own data shows that the district in question has the lowest administrative expenses of any school system in his Senate district, in fact, many times lower as a percentage of budget than the charter schools Mr. Colbeck advocates. His editorial completely mischaracterized the situation, but the story he told fits with his ideology. Similarly, you will notice very carefully worded statements in the book regarding the Right-to-Work legislation, noting the correlation between the recovery of the Michigan economy from the great recession and the passage of RTW. Correlation is not causality, and if there was credible evidence for causality, RTW proponents would have found it. So Mr. Colbeck instead settles for implying it. Reading the book confirmed my experience with Mr. Colbeck that he has a tendency to take positions driven by ideology, and will cherry-pick data to support these positions. This behavior is particularly egregious given Mr. Colbeck's education as an engineer, and his inability or unwillingness to consider contrary data when presented. I'm giving the book one star in recognition of the Herculean effort to write any book, plus a half star for the portion of the book which serves as a technical guide to Michigan state government, generously rounded up to two stars total.

Patrick Colbeck is an honest, principled man, who puts the right thing to do ahead of Party politics. So naturally, the Establishment hates him and bends over backwards to make sure he does not get ahead in the system. He recently lost a bid for the GOP nomination for Michigan Governor, so once again, the swamp wins. We the people NEED more candidates like Patrick Colbeck. We need to educate ourselves about how the system works (or fails to), and support people like Colbeck over the Swamp Things.

This is a must read book for people who are not happy with our politicans. Patrick Colbeck is not your traditional politican. He left his career because he was concerned about what was happening in Michigan and our country. He gives us hope for the future!

I had begun to lose hope in our way of government. Perhaps we are not as noble or selfless as the founding fathers. If every politician approached their responsibilities like Patrick Colbeck, I would have less frustration with decisions and plans that didn’t go the way that I would have preferred. This book is for everyone, no matter your political perspective. This is a primer on restoring confidence in government, and getting rid of the political darkness that has overcome us all.
