This book is 20% about writing, 40% about marketing and 40% repetition, mutual admiration between the two authors, fluff and self promotion. The first 25% (introduction, 4 chapters and some notes) is largely written as an interview - Lopez interviewing LeMont. It was painful to read. It is B-O-R-I-N-G. The only tips in the first section are repeated (several times) in the Golden Nuggets sections. Skip the first part entirely.
I recently read LeMont's book How To Get 100,000 Twitter Followers and enjoyed it. I'm finding it useful (though I question whether or not I'll get the results he brags about) but I certainly did learn from it. I purchased Write Like You're Already Famous because I assumed that I would get instruction (not just "tips") on how to write in the style of his 100,000 Followers book. I say "assume" because notice if you read what is written here where normally you'll find a description of the book, there isn't one. What's written is simply sample dialog from the book.
Section 2 - What You Don't Know Can Hurt You, is about marketing with a significant amount being "re purposed" from the above mentioned book "Hashtags Are the New SEO" and "How to Find Quality Followers?"
Section 3 - All About Writing, does contain useful tips. But that's another beef I have with this book. It's a series of a collection of tips. Its written in stream of consciousness style which is fast pace and easy to read. I actually enjoyed that aspect. But its' also the a lazy way out for the author. For me, the book could have been much, much more useful if he had taken examples of what he considered to be bad writing and made step-by-step revisions showing the reader where to end up.
The book (and this reader) would have been better off and LeMont would have fulfilled his goal of self promotion had he taken parts of early drafts of 100,000 Followers and shown us the revisions he made along the way and discuss why he made the changes. I think that technique would have provided a real education.
Section 4 - The Whole Purpose of Marketing - I only skimmed.
Section 5 - RANTS, RAVES, & CAVES. Just what it says. More stream of consciousness writing.
Personally this book would be better matched to its title if it were half as long. All that is needed is the existing section of tips (even the marketing ones are ok) and a section discussing the writing process in the style the author is very good at using - "Fewer Words-More Impact".
Buy this book if you want a book mostly about marketing. Look else where if you want a book discussing how to write.
WLYAF is witty, thought provoking and entertaining. Author M Lemont shares a wealth of information in varies forms. Some of them direct, some subliminal, all with the intention of motivating you to be the best you can be and break out from millions vying for their fifteen-minutes of fame.
Write Like You’re Already Famous starts as an interview, a taste of the finer things, a little dazzle and mystery with co-author Jennifer Lopez. You get to eavesdrop on a conversation between two professionals and Jennifer does a great job of asking the questions I would have if in her shoes. Next you dive into the theory and the reality of being an author in today’s digital universe. It is a tough act and M Lemont shares his strife and victories.
Then we get to the conversation with you (or me) the direct ‘here’s what you need to do and why’ nitty-gritty of the book. This includes the Golden Nuggets as well as an introduction to other amazing thought provoking ideas and people out there doing exactly what you are! WLYAF has a bit of repetition, but for me repetition works, it reminds me of how everything is connected and nothing can be put in a silo. You can’t complete only one or two pieces of the puzzle and expect success, you have to follow through to the end.
Reverberation and spinning of the same ideas in new ways is actually one of the genius tactics in WLYAF. LeMont challenges the readers to the end, making sure they are paying attention and not skimming the nuggets. If you don’t read the book cover to cover you’ll miss some of the best information he has to offer.
M Lemont taught us about Twitter, the ins and outs and the steps to becoming a master of the Twitter-verse. Write Like You’re Already Famous teaches us about ourselves and give us the tools need to push out of the norm and accomplish our goals.
