Let's start with the good. The presentation options are nice and there's more flexibility in the Universe Mode now. I was able to create 205 Live with only 10 people on the roster, which wouldn't have happened in the past. When you do the MyCareer mode, you can actually interact with personalities backstage. The roster is loaded with RAW, SmackDown, NXT, and 205 Live talents, (with the legacy players available to unlock with virtual currency.) There's a lot to like with the overall presentation options.
The problems begin to arise when you actually start to play. The reversal system is ridiculously outdated at this point and is beyond needing a revamp. Trying to defend in this game is an utter exercise in futility and the CPU has this horrendous ability to "Hulk Up" through everything at any difficulty - Rebalancing the game also has little effect on this. This is less notable in exhibition by comparison to MyCareer mode, but it can still surface there, too. While it's nice for there to be an alternate submission counter in the game, the same needs to be introduced for the pin counter, and that itself is inconsistent in response from time to time.
Playing through the MyCareer mode is frustrating because of its insane logic and over-reliance on virtual currency. I had my tryout match where Tye Dillinger completely annihilated me in the match thanks to the broken reversal system. Yet since I cut a strong promo, I was set to face Bobby Roode for the NXT Title; where I had to have the same match 10 times to beat him because my level 59 character was facing a champion who's ranked 85. You want to improve your players stats? You gotta spend attribute points AND virtual currency. Want moves that are more appropriate for your character? If it's not unlocked, it's gonna cost you virtual currency. You have a beautiful performance center, but you can't interact with it to improve your stats. Further, the same resources that you need to improve your character are the same resources you need to unlock characters, so you're basically made to choose between improving your character or improving your roster.
You may say "Hey, just buy the Accelerator and the KickStart pack", which leads to another problem. Fans are expected to fork over $59.99 year after year for a base video game, but then are expected to fork over a minimum of $14.98 after that because virtual currency is so heavily used throughout the game. At that point, one would probably just pay for the Deluxe edition of the game. I don't have a problem paying for a Season Pass to account for the development time for the new character models, but handicapping the games off-line modes to such a degree feels like a cash grab and is inexcusable.
Compare this to EA's Hockey titles. They sell a game annually as well for about the same price. Yet instead of charging additional money to play the offline mode, they have a "dream team" online mode where players spend virtual (and real) currency to craft decent teams. 2K couldn't have something similar where online players spent currency to manage/upgrade their own factions/promotions to go head-to-head against rivals? I think that would be a better supplemental income stream as opposed to what they have in place now.
Also, for what it's worth, the soundtrack wasn't much to write home about this year except for the Tech-9 song - That was good.
Bottom line, this is a game I should love based on design alone yet I'm instead feeling left unsatisfied thanks to the unbalanced gameplay and need to purchase add-ons for a proper gaming experience. Glad I rented it instead of purchased it because I'd be kicking myself had I done so. I'll hope they get it right for next year but that might be an exercise in futility.
So, 2K, do you know what happens when you release a wrestling game that is slow, clunky, and feels like a chore to play? Huh, do you know what happens? 2K, YOU JUST MADE THE LIST!
If you want to get off the list then go back and play critically acclaimed wrestling games like WWF No Mercy or Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain and try to learn why wrestling fans still love to play these old games to this day and then use that as your blueprint when designing WWE 2K19 so that you can make a wrestling game that is actually fun to play.
I bought this game specifically for the MyCareer because of the prospect of choosing your own journey. However, I watch DenkOps play this game on Youtube, even if you are on Smackdown instead of Raw - you will be thrust into the same storyline.
In these "storylines" there are objectives that you must complete in order to continue.
That - in my opinion - is not a journey... that is a chore list. For example, I am currently stuck playing a random 6-Man Tag Team match with myself and the Usos against Ziggler and The Acsenion. There are three objectives you must complete (Hit 2 finishers, 3 star match, and you must pinn your opponent for the win)
Well, I cant seem to do that. Because the AI refuses to tag me back into the match.
This problem gets greater during a Money In The Bank match where you must hit a OMG moment on the ladder. (Look up the problems for yourself. There are several videos about it.
I have no fun playing this game. This is the first game I feel anxious and nervous about because at any moment the AI can screw you and you have to go back to the beginning.
Jut watch DenkOps playing the Battle Royal... I replayed that 6 times because I was eliminated at random by a clothesline despite having green in my health bar.
This is a problem that will never be fixed. Please please please save your money for a game you will actually enjoy.
