I used organic, cold-pressed coconut oil and organic popcorn kernels. The taste was perfect and rich and tasted like movie theater popcorn, but the healthy version. Movie theaters use partially-hydrogenated coconut oil blends, which, when heated create trans-fats. We all know how bad those are for you. The process to pop in the Whirly Pop was so easy. Secure the lid, lift a flap and put in 2-3 T of oil, about 1/4-1/3 cup of kernels, place on stove top on Medium heat (do not preheat the pot) and start cranking the stir handle. Within 3 minutes it was done. Pull the lid off and let it sit about 30 seconds and then serve. Perfect!
The unit is really thin, and flimsy, but that's why the popcorn gets done so soon, so you have to be careful with it. Also, the snazzy red finish probably won't stay snazzy for long (it's already starting to come off), so I'd probably opt for the boring aluminum next time, if this thing somehow wears out. But it's not that expensive, and I'll be using it a lot.
The problem with the sauce pan is that not all the kernels would pop and often times some would burn and get stuck to the pan. With this, they all pop up very nicely and due to stirring them, they do not burn.
If you are looking for a fun, cheap way to make popcorn out of the microwave, this could certainly fit the bill.
