The Original Whirley-Pop stovetop hand-crank popcorn popper brings it all back with its one-of-a-kind design. You can enjoy light, flavorful popcorn (makes up to six quarts) that you prepare yourself right on the stovetop in just three minutes.
Face it, sometimes the best thing about going out to a movie is the popcorn, those big plump kernels that always seem so much better than what you pop at home. But this simple stovetop popper changes all that. It really does make awesome, fresh-popped corn that might make you start renting videos instead. The sturdy aluminum pan has a clip-on lid with a stay-cool wooden handle. A turn crank on the handle spins the key element: the stainless steel stirring system that keeps the corn moving across the bottom of the pan, for even heat and oil distribution, ensuring the best popping results. The lid has steam vents, to help keep the popcorn dry and crisp. The enclosed booklet is a wonderful resource, with not only clear and detailed instructions, but also dozens of recipes and popcorn history and lore. These are folks who really do know their popcorn, and the results are outstanding. --Cynthia Nims

The plastic gear mechanism on the new one broke after a few months. I then received another one as a gift & it broke after only a month. I won't purchase this pan (with the plastic gears) again. I am currently using a 4 qt stock pot which works fine.
I've been wanting one of these for awhile and finally broke down and got one. I was surprised at how light this thing is, the box probably weighed more than the popper did!! Upon opening the popper up to see the inside, there is really nothing more than a flimsy metal wire that does the stirring. Seriously? I don't expect that to last long at all, I'm sure it will get bent the first time I take it apart to clean it!! The rest of the parts on this popper also seem fairly flimsy. I know it's made out of aluminum, so I expect it to be light, but I also expect certain parts to be made out of stronger materials, perhaps a thicker grade aluminum than common tin foil, I exaggerate of course, but not by much. So with all that in mind, I figured that I'd give it a try anyway.
I popped the lid off so that I could wash it before first use, even tho I was afraid I'd break the thing doing so. Washed it and then seasoned the pot as per the instructions. I then reassembled the popper and got ready to pop.
The crank at the end of the handle turns easily, until the pot is about 1/2 full of popped corn, then the flimsy wire inside gets stuck on what I assume is a partially popped kernel. This causes the gears on the top to dislodge. As the popper becomes even more full, the handle becomes almost impossible to turn without the gears dislodging. At the end of the pop cycle, I had to resort to the old fashioned pan shaking because the crank is quite frankly a piece of doodoo!! This of course, defeats the entire purpose of having the thing in the first place! I am not a strong person, I was not forcing the crank at all, it did not take much to dislodge the gears on the top of the popper. In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, the gears turn the horizontally spinning rod connected to the crank that you're turning into a vertical motion that turns the center rod which spins the wire, which in theory keeps your corn and oil moving, thus eliminating the need to shake the hell out of the pot!!
The finished popped corn tasted great and it only took a few minutes, really no longer than the microwave stuff, although I have a pot to clean out. There were very few unpopped kernels but the thing is, I don't know if the results are due to what I put in it or the popper itself. Probably a little of both
So, long story short, while it did make good popcorn and it was easy to use, the quality of the product was poor. Very cheaply made, with, in my opinion, quite a few design flaws, mainly the crappy little wire in the bottom and the sad little gears at the top!! You would think a company who supposedly specializes in poppers and popping corn would make a better product!! Maybe they have a "deluxe" model?
If you love popcorn and plan to use this 1 or 2 times a month, forget about it. However if you're the type that maybe only makes popcorn when the grandkids are over, then maybe.......
I don't expect it to hold up, so I'll be returning it. The only reason it got 2 stars is because the results were awesome, it's just that the product itself sucks
Every Whirley-Pop we've owned eventually goes in the trash because those two gears split and fall apart. So now - no more Whirley-Pops!
