I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through these pages and learning more about her approach to creating gorgeous, abstract art. Over 70 gallery images of her own work are spread throughout the book to illustrate different techniques. Perfectly bending simplicity and complexity, her artwork is quite stunning and has really motivated me to want to use some of her techniques to bring the same wabi-sabi quality to my art. I also loved the fact that each of art pieces was accompanied by a brief description of her process, inspiration, and/or interpretation.

Serena starts the book by explaining the concept of Wabi-sabi, in words, photographs, and poetry. A challenging concept to define, she states "Wabi-sabi is an aesthetic that values the passing of time, the seasoning of time and elements, the handmade and the simple." The book is divided into an introduction and 7 chapters that guide the reader through a series of illustrated step-out projects that themselves reflect the wabi-sabi concept. But the information is presented in such a way as to also provide many stand-alone techniques that can be incorporated into any approach to art.

With words like spattering, sponging, dropping, wiping, scraping, and incising used in section headings, I knew that this book would resonate with me. While I found the step-outs clear and easy to follow, I generally do not re-create the projects in art books. Rather, I look for approaches and techniques that provide inspiration and ideas that I can then incorporate in my own style into my own work. And there were plenty of inspiration and ideas to be found on these pages.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this to be released. It arrived sooner than expected and far exceeded my expectations. The photography is beautiful and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The personal anecdotes are a shear delight.

I love Serena’s artwork. Her techniques are current and sometimes quite innovative. It shows everything from basics to more advanced projects so it works for beginners as well as experienced artists.

I really like 2/3 or so of this book, with good clear instructions and photos, and inspiration. But, I was not expecting that so much of the book would be about encaustic painting. I would not have bought it if I'd known that. That should have been a separate book of it's own. Encaustic is not something just any collage/mixed-media artist does. It is toxic and expensive.

If you are only going to purchase a few books in the field of mixed media, make sure one of them is Wabi-Sabi. It is easy to understand, but is not written "down" to us. There are a multitude of different techniques with lots of wonderful examples. It is an wonderful experience from which you will learn alot while becoming excited to see things in a new way. Not only will you learn a lot, you will also have a lot of fun doing it.

Intention and content are lovely. I enjoy the use of inks as glazes, they work well and she gives many examples of great pieces. There are instructions for steps if you want to do similar pieces and Serena has wax work that is fresh. I have read it twice and use it as a reference as well. Every day beauty with every day applications for creative projects.

This book made me take out my camera again looking for unusual shots and not the pretty ones. One instructor had told me in the past that bad photos often result in great art. I saw this reflected in looking at the book.

I ordered this last December, pre-release, and waited eagerly for it's arrival! I was not disappointed! I love Serena's use of texture and color to create an external image of her internal process. Her stories are sweet, and I love her use of Haiku in her art making. Fun book! Time to PLAY!

Wabi Sabi - what a fun name and what fun I have had trying out this style of art. This is a lovely book and applying what i have learnt has added a completely new dimension to what I had previously been doing. Judging by my friends and family's enthusiastic comments about my Wabi Sabi artistic efforts, this book has definitely assisted me to produce some very appealing art works in mixed media.
Wabi Sabi Art Workshop has broadened my horizons and enabled me to be able to think and apply paint and mixed media Wabi Sabi Style to great effect! Try it out and be amazed at the beautiful, liberating art you will produce, think out of your box!
