Top Customer Reviews
I have a iphone 7+. My whole work live is in this device. I do not have or want a iPad. I want to take paper notes, transfer them automatically and have them finally ready for use on my phone and laptop. The Inkspace app that manages the communication with the pad stores all information and sends it to the cloud (luckily no one can read my handwriting). What then? Its in the cloud. Nice. So what? getting it on my laptop and download it as PDF is a manual step and requires Internet connection.
Inkspace based OCR costs me almost 4$/Month ... c'mon, I have spent a 100$ on a pen/paper notepad already. Upload to Evernote or Onenote needs to be done manually for every page. Not very practical. In reality it is annoying, because I never know which page I uploaded last.
And also, if the device turns off because you fell asleep in a meeting it won't turn on once you continue writing. You have to turn it back on and later combine the pages (the tool does not know which page you are writing on, so every time you sync or turn on, it creates a new digital page).
You see, while it provides a way to digitize your ink it requires a new level of attention without giving the advertised "no brainer" benefit of going digital. So unless there is a automated sharing with OneNote/Evernote I have to return the device.
Coming to my initial "unless you have a Ipad" statement ... There is a neat pice of software called Bamboo Paper. it is basically a digital notebook that can read these digital pages and edit/store them properly. Unfortunately, this s/w is not available for iPhones.
BTW, there is no much support for this device. Most help pages lead into 404's and there is not much via the manual. So lern if for yourself ... or not. Maybe I am missing something, but for now my digital workflow stops on my phone. If I have no access from my laptop and the ability to search my notes without relying on a cloud connection, this whole idea is great but not ready for prime time.
I wanted to love this device but the major drawback is the ink in the pen. If you are a lefty you will know what I am talking about, the ink smears. I have used gels for years because of this and I had really hoped that Wacom would understand this issue, but the ink that comes with the pen is your typical ball point ink that smears.
It came without any instructions but once I installed Inkspace on my iPhone (5s, which the Wacom web page says is compatible), it was easy to link it with the Slate. The Wacom website didn't help me figure stuff out. With the basic app, you can just export as JPG, PNG, PDF, or WILL. With the plus app, the menu has two more options, Ink to Text and Ink to Vector. I didn't read the specs above carefully and didn't realize you have to make an online account and pay $2.99/month for the Inkspace Plus app to get the ink to text feature. At least we get a 3-month free trial. I don't use Evernote, OneNote, etc. but you can copy the text so I'm just going to copy it to a Google Doc. I have the Slate linked to my phone but once I press the Slate's button to sync a page, it appears on my Inkspace web portal page on my laptop, too. It's easier to work with there.
I found this video helpful: [...] They show how you can draw, erase, and rewind basically.
Below is how an Ink to Text worked for the attached image. I did this on lined paper. I was impressed that it understood my bullet points and cursive but it's not great at aligning text.
