I have a Smart Board and I have used this with the Smart Board technology to draw on the board while sitting down on days I am not feeling good. It has been amazing for that. If you have a Smart Board, this works great if you want to screen record your lessons, or even if you are having a bad day and do not want to be on your feet for a full lesson.
This also works amazing using the snipping tool that is in your computer if you have the right version that I cannot name. I use that all the time. I can bring up the PDF's of the homework or notes, snip the screen with the page on it, and write on it right on the computer while the students watch, take notes, etc. My students have been loving it.
This also works great in a certain word program that is the 2013 version. I have not noticed this in earlier versions, cause I don't have any, so it could work in them too, but I know in 2013 there is a pen option. I can open up a document and write directly on the document in various colors and thicknesses. This is awesome for designing my own worksheets, and then writing the keys to the worksheets. I also use this to write up the notes and make pages where students who were absent can get a copy of the notes online, as well as watch a video of the lesson. I can see this being great for an English teacher who needs to grade essays. You can mark all over the digital copies, (save trees yay) and send the corrected work right back to the student digitally.
I've attached a picture and a video showing how I use this. As a teacher, I am in love and will never, ever not have one of these. The price was amazing for my small budget, and because I purchased it myself they cannot take it away from me, ha!
On a side note, I do also draw with it and use it generally. I am so very pleased. Best teacher purchase ever! Minus my coffee pot.
Technical things I like:
You can hover a decent distance over the tablet and it will still move the cursor ( again, i had a bad tablet that only let me hover a 1/4 inch).
All buttons on the tablet and pen are super easy to map. I mapped them to undo, redo, zoom in, zoom out, pan, and hold pressure.
The nib feels great on the tablet. It doesn't slip around, but it doesn't stick either. Feels kind of like pencil and paper.
The look and feel is fantastic
The pressure sensitivity can be adjusted so it's perfect. Everything comes out flawlessly on the screen with no lag or blots where the sensitivity gets confused at low pressure.
Technical things that are kind of meh :
Occasionally the pen draws out a dot of full pressure. I might be slipping on a button or something, but it's not an impedance because it only happens rarely.
I haven't found this to impact my quality or efficiency, but the pen feels a little light and a little plastic-y. I might just end up getting used to it. The texture keeps it in your hand.
The drivers didn't install right when i ran the installer on the disk, but i was able to easily download them (this was probably an issue with my machine).
Would I recommend this to a friend? YES!
I can see myself using this 70$ tablet for years. 10/10 best tablet for your money.
I chose this tablet as a replacement for my nine-year-old Graphire 4 (medium, pictured underneath). After spending a few hours on Amazon, I decided this would be my best option for my price range/needs. After spending a few hours with it, here are some notes:
-This tablet is small. It fits within the active draw area of my old tablet. The active area for this drawing tablet is smaller too, but for the work I do it's negligible. The upgraded version of this tablet (the medium art) is double the price. So keep that in mind if you want to go bigger. I'm used to drawing in a small space so it doesn't bother me too much.
-I didn't even bother with the prepackaged software so I can't yay or nay that part. I have no use for them. I just downloaded the drivers from wacom's site and plugged it in and went to town!
-I'm used to the Graphire's smooth surface. This new tablet has a textured surface and it feels weird but I'll get used to it. I also noticed this pen's nibs are shorter as well. Can't wait to see how long a nib will last (luckily the tablet comes with 3 spare nibs, and my old nibs fit).
-As a note, this is NOT the same tablet as the CTH490AK. This tablet DOES NOT have touch capabilities. That's fine for me, I wouldn't want to spend $$$ and muck the surface up with my oily fingers.
-Connects with a usb cable, but you may purchase a wireless kit if you want.
-I'm really glad they did away with the rubber grip. My grips never lasted long and got disgusting rather quick.
-I'm taking off a star because they removed the eraser nib. Not that I ever used mine, but it seems silly. In addition, I wish they offered a medium size in this tablet. I would like to have seen one offered for about $100. I would have bought that one if that was the case. Lastly, they could have offered an all black version.
I'll write an update eventually.
