I've wanted a tablet for several years now while struggling to draw digitally with only a mouse. I heard good things about Wacom and decided to get the medium size of this tablet.
Notes: -The active area size is smaller than the overall tablet size (8.5x5.3in for medium), so be sure to research the size you want. -The loop at the top does hold the pen, but you have to insert the side of the pen opposite the nib; the nib end will not fit. -The tablet maps the screen exactly, so you won't end up drawing off of the tablet's surface. -It doesn't pick up on my hand when I rest it on the surface, so that's nice. -3 pen nibs are included inside the back panel (in addition to the one already in the pen), and there's a nib removal tool on the back as well.
Pros: -Very easy to install the driver for Mac. An installation CD is included but the driver can be downloaded online if you don't have a CD/DVD drive on your computer. -Works great with Clip Studio Paint! It's difficult drawing on art programs without having a tablet, but now I can draw natural lines without the shakiness of a mouse. It's wonderful being able to finally use pen pressure. -Smooth drawing surface and very thin and light compared to my friend's Intuos5 medium. -I thought it might be difficult to draw with the disconnect between drawing on a tablet and looking at the screen, but it's surprisingly easy to get used to it. -The back panel has descriptions for everything (spare pen nibs, USB cable plug) engraved in the surface, which is convenient and looks really friendly :D
Cons: -The back cover was very difficult to open and took a lot more force to pry open than I was comfortable with. But once that was off, I couldn't get the cover back on! There are 5 notches in the back that line up with little nubs on the cover, probably to secure the cover, but one nub on the side will not go into its notch no matter how hard I press and another nub partially broke as well (see pictures). I'll probably have to break off the first nub and just tape the cover on. This problem with the cover design are why I'm rating 4 stars.
This is what their "bamboo" line was. I have Windows 7, 64bit. Works wonderfully, plugged it right in, let my computer pull drivers from the internet and poof. I HAVE WORKING PAD, even without the programs it comes with.
The pad is super light, but I wish I could use that little fabric tab at the top of the pad to store the pen. The pen doesn't attach to the pad in any way, so you will need to be sure you have another way to keep track of your pen. It comes with it's own custom USB cord, which is for the best. You can get the Wacom Wireless Accessory Kit for Bamboo and Intuos Tablets (ACK40401) to make it wireless, but I am glad it was not automatically included, since honestly not everyone needs that option, and it would automatically increase the price needlessly. SMART MOVE, WACOM!
Installing the software gave many more options to customizing the touch and use of the touchpad/art pad. There are four customizable buttons on two corners of the pad, and two more buttons on the pen, itself. You can configure the buttons to have any number of keystrokes, customizable per program. That's right, THE BUTTONS CAN BE CONFIGURED PER PROGRAM!
Incredible sensitivity, a convenient physical switch to turn off the touchpad option. This is important, because it makes it extremely difficult to accidentally turn it on or off. Comes with your choice of software, that being the only thing that affects the price. Works great with GIMP, Blender, and of course Photoshop.
I am giving this product a 5/5 not because it is the best graphics tablet out there, but because it is exactly what I expect for the price. It is a decent size, easy to use and setup, and responsive. I read a few negative reviews causing me to hesitate on making the purchase, but decided to take the chance. Meaning no offense to the reviewers, but most of the negative feedback involved either driver issues, problems registering the product, or that the product felt 'cheap'. For those that had legitimate hardware failure, there's not much you can do, and I haven't had any experience with Wacom's support staff. As for the driver and registration issues, I experienced precisely none. Granted, I am a developer and may have more experience than some, but it was a no brainer. I personally suspect that user error had quite a bit to do with this, and in the average user's defense, it is understandable in today's world of plug-in-play easy installs. Good rule of thumb, install the driver and software BEFORE you connect the device, to prevent your OS from trying to automatically do it for you. Wacom writes it's own drivers, and they do work. As for the registration, took about 30 seconds, including making a new account. The quality is great for a fraction of the cost of the 'big boys' out there. Now if this sucker fails on me in the next few weeks, this review might change a bit, but I have high hopes. Enjoy :)
I have a decent sketching talent, on paper, but i wanted to hone my digital skills in this ever evolving digital world. I researched a lot and decided on this product. I am so glad that i did, i use it almost daily. Its sensitive enough to sketch my smallest detail and the pressure sensitivity is fantastic. I love the programable buttons on the pencil, which can be programmed to act differently in different programs. Usualy mine end up being pencil and eraser. The four buttons on the top work the same way. I would have liked the buttons on the side or the bottom if i had designed it, but it works fine this way too. Im able to rest my hand on the pad while i drae as well, which makes it feel more like drawing on paper, and less stress on your wrist during long drawing periods.
