5.0 out of 5 stars Read this if you're lucky enough to live with a dog
By Tim Steele on March 10, 2020
This author is well known for her critical look at the science behind animal behavior. In this book, she pulls together all the relevant information from hundreds of studies and interviews with the world's most knowledgeable animal behavior academics and practitioners to provide a solid resource for those fortunate to live with a dog. Presented in a straight-forward and easy to read manner, a person who has a dog (or is considering getting one for the first time) will be provided nearly everything that they'll need to know. Happy doesn't necessarily mean spoiled - and the author provides information about training, grooming, exercise, nutrition, health, enrichment, and aging. As a professional dog trainer, I'm going to recommend this book to every one of my clients. And I wholeheartedly recommend it to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, very comprehensive
By Amazon Customer on March 10, 2020
I personally have well over 100 books about dogs, dog training and dog behavior. I also have 3 dogs myself. I am a highly dedicated dog trainer for "companion" dogs, continually enhancing my personal education on the subject. This book is not a repeat of what I have learned from all the other trainers, behaviorist and scientist I have studied. It is not a training book per se, even though it will greatly aid your training efforts. I often tell my clients "If you want to give your dog the best life possible, you need to get educated". We can't teach our dogs how to navigate our unpredictable, sometimes confusing human world, without understanding how they learn and what motivates them. Because dogs can't talk to us how do we know the kind of life they would prefer? Her book Wag The Science of Making Your Dog Happy answers those questions and much more. Zazie's book Wag The Science of Making Your Dog Happy will educate you in a most delightful and engaging way. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for dog lovers!
By Drew on March 10, 2020
Wag is a great book that covers a lot of ground for those living with dogs, or those hoping to add a dog to their life! Everything is science-based and backed up by latest research. What we know about dogs is changing so rapidly, and as a dog trainer I've had a lot of books to recommend over the years but am always looking for the latest and greatest and am pleased that Wag hits the mark and is a great read for new and experienced dog people!

5.0 out of 5 stars Factual information about dogs! Such a rare thing!
By Jackie on March 10, 2020
As a professional trainer, I’m super careful about what books I recommend to my clients. When it comes to dogs, there is so much outdated and incorrect information floating around out there. If you don’t carefully curate the information you’re taking in, you could end up so frustrated and confused. Zazie takes the science of behavior and learning and boils it down in a way that anyone can understand. I’m so glad that this book is available and I will be recommending it to ALL my clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
By Ashlee Zucker on March 10, 2020
Whether you are a first-time dog owner, or you’ve had dogs for your whole life but want to learn more, Wag: the Science of Making Your Dog Happy is a fantastic read. The information is completely science-based, but easy to understand (with references included if you’re nerdy like me and want to read the studies described therein). At the end of each chapter, Dr. Todd breaks down the science in easy-to-follow steps you can start doing at home. Plus, she includes recommendations from experts in the fields of veterinary medicine and dog behavior. While I wouldn’t consider this book a “how-to” for dog training, it definitely belongs on the bookshelf of any trainer or dog owner who wants to help their best friend live life to the fullest!

This is not a reflection on the content of the book but rather the state I received it in.
I couldn't give it as a gift as I had intended and I was under the impression that I was purchasing a new book but what I got was a rather battered copy.
Really disappointed

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide
Reviewed in Canada on March 19, 2020
Zazie Todd's "Wag" delivers a strong message: we all (dog and human) have a lot to gain from looking at the evidence. Her book is a wealth of facts about dogs and their welfare, based on scientific research. Each chapter ends with a section on how to apply the science at home. It is immensely practical. Yet it also reads like a personal journey. Todd cites statistics on the link between behaviour problems and the number of dogs who end up in shelters or are euthanized; yet she also speaks in her own voice about the challenge of raising a dog with issues. In other words, this book is not a lecture; it's a heartfelt handbook to improving our own relationships with the dogs we love -- while we make their lives better using the latest science on what works. I've read a lot of books in my quest to help a fearful dog. I wish I'd had this one years ago.
