Burned Out Motor

The motor died after using 4 times since I received the sprayer on 4/4/15. I loved the sprayer for ease of assembly and use. Yesterday, spray gun smelled like electrical burning and motor would work no more. I called Wagner technical at which time the person told me this sprayer was not for use with water based paint. I read to her from the book enclosed with sprayer that it can be used with water based paint. I was using Minwax polyacrylic water based sealer to seal knotty pine wood. Please note it was performing beautifully until it "died". She said the sprayer was intended only for small, fine jobs. No where do I read this sprayer should be used for small jobs ONLY. All the reviews I read before purchasing this sprayer indicated otherwise, e.g., used for painting home fences, decks, furniture, etc. There were many happy customer reviews which is why I purchased this product. I was told to send sprayer to Wagner at my cost and they would look at it. If it is manufacturer defect, they will pay for shipping sprayer back to me. I'm very unhappy since I was in the middle of a fine finish project and even more unhappy due to what appears to be poor tech support from Wagner. Note, technician appeared to not believe I was referring to a Control Spray Double Duty paint sprayer even though I was reading directly from the box.

I smoked through staining my fence. Made life so much easier and took little time to get the hang of it. As with a lot of projects most work is in the prep work. Pressure washed first, 10+ years of paint, then stained. Great product and highly recommend for fence staining.

Since there were no reviews for this sprayer used with Benjamin Moore Advance paint on cabinets, I thought I'd post my experience. Searched for a while to see if anyone had experience with HVLP's and BM Advance, and eventually stumbled on some advice to thin the paint 10% with distilled water. Started with 5% and it came out pretty spotty and orange-peely. The next coat I went to 10% and it sprays like a dream. Got the perfect professional looking result as desired.

First I Hated It Then I Loved It

Gosh I really started to dislike it when I first used it. But then I figured it out. My project was to reface my kitchen cabinets. I used Sherwin Williams Pro Classic paint and Minwax Polycrylic clear coat with this. Thanks to one of the posters, I diluted the paint just a little more than 4:1 (4 parts paint plus just over 1 part water). Make sure you practice on a piece of cardboard first or pick up a used cabinet door for a $1 at your local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store place (if you have one near you). But honestly, you'll probably won't really figure it out until you paint a few pieces first and find your groove.

Before spraying, make sure all parts (reservoir and spray tip) are tightened or you'll get splatter and spitting (oops). But once you figure this baby out, you'll be knocking out some professional looking work in a matter of minutes.

Tips:
When you use a high solids paint like Sherwin Williams, keep in mind you have to have a higher dilution ratio than a lower quality, thinner/low solids paint. That's what I had to realize.

Also, when painting the doors and drawer fronts, I found that having the flow setting set on the lowest setting and the spray pattern in a circle to produce the best results.

Overall, this will save you a lot of time if you have a lot to paint. There's going to be a threshold you'll have to figure out if it's worth it or not. The finish alone will make it worth it. But also remember to use a high quality paint like Sherwin Williams if you really care about the piece. A high solids paint that levels beautifully makes all the difference.

Made painting cabinet doors and drawers painless.

I bought this specifically to paint cabinet drawers and doors for a recent kitchen remodel. I used Sherwin Williams Ovation cabinet and door trim paint. I started out thinning the paint with Windex (didn't have any cheap windshield cleaner as suggested by YouTubers). About 5-10% (I didn't measure) Windex or until the paint was the consistency of oil-based paint (like crepe batter).

I used the small bottle when spraying my nine drawer fronts and the Windex thinned paint worked fine. But when using the larger bottle for the sixteen cabinet doors I had to add Floetrol to keep the paint from drying out and clumping in the nozzle. Once you get the paint thinned right the sprayer worked like a dream.

The nozzle is very easy to disassemble and clean. I spent way more time than necessary cleaning the nozzle between coats as you can get it fairly clean just by spraying warm soapy water through the gun for 10-20 seconds. But I never knew when I was going to have the time to spray the next coat so I played it safe. If you're going to spray multiple coats in a day then the warm soapy water spray out will be more than enough.
