In this unbelievably tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner s mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals - suspicion which quickly turns to hysteria as the townspeople begin killing each other in brutal outbursts for seemingly no reason. As the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he agrees to consult a shaman for answers - unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous.
Over six years in the making, director Na Hong-jin s meticulously crafted follow-up to the globally acclaimed THE YELLOW SEA and THE CHASER (his third to premiere at the Festival de Cannes) smashed box office records upon its debut in South Korea, where fans are already making return viewings to catch new clues and debate what s sure to be the most talked-about ending of 2016.

"What makes THE WAILING so unusually disturbing is the almost palpable aura of evil it radiates from calm start to sorrowful finish." --Los Angeles Times
"A bone-chilling, thunderous descent into hell" --Twitch

This story is very good. It starts out kind of funny at time even goofy and comical. It gets very serious and the story line twist and turn a lot. Many people seen this and are confused even but it is great. A very well thought out movie. I like the fact that it shows ceremony rituals too.
This movie, I feel may strike some viewers as a bit confusing. Some reviews I have read before and after viewing the movie hated or strongly disliked the ending. To be completely honest it was the ending of the film that I really liked, and honestly made me rate this 4 stars rather then 3.
This movie isn't flawless, make sure you keep your volume remote close, as this movie has ALOT of wailing... go figure. But to the point in some scenes, its just to much, to loud, and to often.
Also some of the acting is over the top, and overacted... but... if you can forgive these flaws, this is actually a very entertaining and original story.
If you have enjoyed Asian horror in the past, such as Ringu, or Ju-On, you may like it.
But I will say that this movie is not for everyone.
As far as the movie itself (outside of the physical product of the blu-ray), it is a masterpiece of horror well deserving of the acclaim it has received on the film festival circuit. Horror has seen a resurgence in the US, but few of those recent releases display half the nuance and writing chops displayed in Na Hong-jin's The Wailing. Korean directors have demonstrated a strong flair for genre pictures for several years now (The Host, Mother, I Saw the Devil, Snowpiercer), and now with films like The Wailing they're giving Hollywood a serious run for its money on production value. This is a gorgeous movie at all levels. The video and sound are both top notch, and the acting is superb. This is a movie that will revolutionize genre film-making in Korea, and I can't wait to see what other goodies we get from the peninsula in the next few years.
