In this tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner's mysterious appearance in a village causes suspicion among locals which turns to hysteria when people begin brutally killing each other for no reason. In Korean with English subs.
This is an excellent film, a very welcome addition to my growing collection of Korean thriller films. Beautifully filmed, with a very intriguing and thought provoking story line. I've already watched my Blu-ray three times and I'm sure I will watch it again. This film has some very undeserved poor reviews here due to issues with the initial instant video release lacking subtitles (which has apparently been solved), contributing to a lower than deserved star rating. This is one of my favorite films, and I do have a very large collection. Buy the Blu-ray, you won't be sorry!
2016 was Amazing year for Korean Films (with films like Train to Busan, and The Hand-Maiden) which leads me to The Wailing. This film is an unbelievable blend of so many genres that if done wrong would be a total disaster. The Wailing is a long film, and you have to really pay attention because if you miss certain scenes, you will be slightly confused. Do not get me wrong, this film is in my top ten of the year along with the other two films I mentioned above, The Wailing is a film like no other that you will see here in the States because we just are not that savy with originality of late. It is a comedy at times, a police procedural, a thriller, a philosophical drama, and last most a truly horrifying supernatural thriller that will stay with you long after viewing. The last 25 minutes are truly terrifying with some imagery that has actually given me some sleepless nights.
This is a very short and to-the-point review. "The Wailing" is a masterpiece of engrossing, brooding horror; a perfect cinematic examination of pure unadulterated evil and its many faces and manipulations. At 156 minutes it's long but there is not one wasted second and no filler whatsoever. Everything in the film has relevance to the story, and frankly, I didn't want it to end. This would make one hell of a mini-series, but for now I'm quite happy with "The Wailing" as a film. If it's jumps and jolts that defines your idea of a scare-flick, then skip this. But if you like dark, uncompromising and viciously unconventional horror, then you need to stop what you're doing and see this movie! Whatever you do, don't give up on it and don't pay any attention to anyone who says its too long. This is a complex story with more than one road the viewer must travel in order for everything to come together at the end. The final moments of "The Wailing" don't necessarily provide a satisfying answer to everything you just witnessed, and it doesn't need to. It's all there. Just think about it. On the other hand, you might not want to think about it too hard, if you intend on sleeping peacefully.
The Wailing. Its kind of infamous for being legitimately scary and well made.. I meant to watch it Halloween night but I chickened out. Imagine my surprise when I finally fired the damnable thing up with my blue crystal media device and found my self in a genuine and heartfelt almost quirky story about a rural village and its oddball residents. Not over the top obnoxious goofy but light and adorable. There was some weird stuff going on but nothing too scary I was never jolted out of the story by a contradiction of tones, the pacing is masterful. A significant amount of time passed before I realized I was the toad in the slowly boiling pot of water when the s*** went ever so slightly sideways and kept on perfectly building up tension and dread until I was in full on nightmare territory. If you like foreign films particularly Korean, so many good films coming out of Korea. If you like horror films or just well made films I highly recommend it.
Subtitle available now on Sept 14. On my xbox which was not before. Just scroll to subtitle option on ur controller. It is is usually in far right with a rectangular box and line through it. Great well done movie. GO FOR IT. It is good now. This story is very good. It starts out kind of funny at time even goofy and comical. It gets very serious and the story line twist and turn a lot. Many people seen this and are confused even but it is great. A very well thought out movie. I like the fact that it shows ceremony rituals too.
