Dr. Clifton has been my primary doctor for over 3 years! I was significantly overweight, diabetic, with high blood pressure and other complications due to the long-term effects of these conditions.

On my first visit, Dr. Clifton advised me to switch to a plant-based diet and told me that once I did, I would lose weight. More importantly, she said that my health would improve. Now, I have no need for the several drugs my previous doctors had me taking.

It took me about 2 weeks to adjust to this "new" way of - if you will pardon me - feeding my body. After that, I found it fairly easy and was amazed by how easily my weight dropped almost without effort. I also walked every day - and still do - and increased my distance every few days; My personal best is 5+ miles. (Yes, you do have to get off the couch and exercise!)

I think this book will help you to live a better, healthier life. My BP still needs regulating but at a smaller dose of medicine. NO MORE insulin shots or diabetic pills! I am almost 59 years old and have not felt this great in a couple of decades!

Reading this book was a joy. Who would have thought that reading medical information could be such fun? It was like sitting down with a friend and having a meaninful conversation. (of course this friend has a medical background) This author shares the difficulties that she has had with a vegan diet and offers suggestions that she has used. I can only hope that she will come out with a book with all of her receipes in it. The ones that she has included are terrific, but I would like more.

I prefer to follow doctors/teachers who look healthy. I met with Dr. Clifton for a consultation in September. She is a picture of glowing health and a very positive example of what plant-based eating can do.

This book is great for someone just learning about plant-based eating and for people like me who sabotage themselves by giving in to cravings. It is motivational and encouraging. Dr. Clifton details her transition to plant-based eating, what she eats, and how to deal with eating out and with cravings. There are very helpful recipes sprinkled throughout the book and in the back of the book. There is additional information from very knowledgeable experts in this field.

I was fortunate to obtain the Kindle version when it was offered for free. For other than novels, I tend to be a "book" person because I find it easier to return to pages or sections that I want to read again when I have a book. I find myself wanting to revisit various sections of this book. For that reason, if I were trying to decide between the Kindle or paperback version, I would choose the paperback version of this book.

I have been learning about plant-based diets for the past few months. It all started after watching the documentary Forks Over Knives. Someone in an online community for plant-based dieters recommended this book and I am glad that they did. This book is great for anyone who is interested in getting some basic information in a non-preachy, non-judgmental way. The book is almost conversational. The book has a lot of the same information that you will find in other books on plant-based eating. Why only four stars? The section near the end on the ethical reasons for eating a plant-based diet seemed to be an afterthought. It features the writings of others who have written on the topic. It was like the doctors were saying, "Okay, this was not our motivation for going plant-based, but just in case here's some information to consider." That section doesn't flow very well with the rest of the book and I had to force myself to get through it. But overall, I think I would recommend this book as a good place to start over books like The China Study or The Engine 2 Diet.

While I am already sold out on the plant based diet, I really enjoyed this book anyway. And I read several different ones the subject.
This book is inspiring for anyone who wants to change their lifestyle. I didn't realize this book was about plant based diet until I started reading it (I downloaded it for free) and that was a big plus for me.
And it had a nicely incorporated "how to" within the personal stories (which I found interesting)

In retrospect, I would have paid for this book.

It is worth it.

PS. The Kindle edition could use some tweaking, there were a few pages with extra tips that I was unable to read without zooming in, but it didn't take much away from the book.

I had my yearly physical with Dr. Mary Clifton in 2006 and was advised that my sugar level was slightly elevated and needed to watch my sugar intake. I learned about diabetes when I was in nurses training and I had a really hard time with the diabetic diet. I did not want to be diabetic, so I decided this day to take obvious sugar out of my diet. No more soda pop, cookies, cherry pie or chocolate. Dr. Clifton was pushing a vegetarian diet, so I thought I would try to do this also. No more beef, bread and fast food. Losing weight was not my primary concern, not being diabetic was. The weight came off naturally.

Dr. Mary Clifton and Dr. Chelsea Clinton put together this wonderful book on the healthy benefits of a plant based diet. This diet has done wonders for me and hope you enjoy reading this book for a healthy lifestyle.

I highly recommend this book if you are new to plant based diets.
