I had no idea what was in store for me when I started to read Waiting for Tuesday. This book is filled with so much...friendship, loyalty, family, trust, heartache, forgiveness, misunderstanding and love. I laughed, cried, cheered and was frustrated throughout this book. It deals with heartbreaking situations and teaches compassion for the unknown and unexpected.
Tuesday was raised by a free spirited mom who constantly moved. Tuesday loved her childhood and didn't regret it, but wanted to put down roots and stay in one place. Her best friend Becky was more like a sister and was her biggest supporter. While her mom continued to move from state to state and not understand why Tuesday didn't want the same for herself Becky stayed by her side.
Tuesday dreamed of having her own store to interact with the customers that loved her homemade lotions, lip balms, soaps and oils. She finally found the perfect location and the perfect contractor to make her dreams a reality. The shop was three years in the making and her first step to finally feeling settled.
John took over his bosses construction project last minute. When he showed up at the first day and was being introduced to the client he recognized her from his Uncle's bar that he worked at the night before. He was drawn to her the moment he met her, but walked away knowing she was the type who would want a relationship, and he was the type who avoided them. The only relationship he was interested in having was with his family.
As time went on a Tuesday and a John tried avoiding each other on the job site. She would get so frustrated with him ignoring her. John would keep his distance so he wouldn't be tempted by his desire for her. He had his own demons from his childhood that kept him from freely giving his love.
Finally they both started to give up on some of their stubbornness. The only thing they asked of one another was honesty.
“I bit my lip and looked down to my feet. He looked so serious, as if he were negotiating a business deal. But then I frowned because maybe he was. Actually, I knew that’s what this was. A business deal. A no-strings relationship where my heart was held as collateral. I could say no… I should say no… but I found myself looking him in the eyes and nodding in agreement in spite of my better judgment. I didn’t care what this was. I wanted it. It was reckless, but I wanted it. I’d never been reckless before in my life. I did the safe things, the well thought out things, and for once in my life, I was feeling the need to take risks. Maybe it was because I’d already put my whole savings on the line with this shop. Or maybe it was because I couldn’t bear the thought of ending it just yet. Yes, my heart was on the line, but I didn’t care.”
Book Two in the Suspicious Hearts series, Waiting for Tuesday, is written by author Taylor Sullivan. This is a stand-alone novel with a few, small supporting characters from the first book. Tuesday has not had a stable home most of her life, constantly moving, living the life as a wanderer with her mother. She’s on her own and wants roots, she wants consistency, a family, love. The daughter of a single mother, she craves to live her life with the promise of a full family. John doesn’t do relationships, he lives week to week, just pushing through. His past has deeply impacted him and it follows him. Yet, when John meets Tuesday, everything changes.
This book certainly pulls your heartstrings. It’s touching, fully emotionally. It touches on several topics to include: sense of loss, abandonment, abuse, disappointment and more. Taylor Sullivan ties these all up nicely with a little bow within this novel. What happens when you have a “secret” that you know will shatter what you feel is your happily ever after? Then when it does exactly what you think it’ll do, how do you move on?
I would have loved to have seen more character development of Tuesday and John, but it doesn’t reflect poorly on how this story is written. I did enjoy reading this story and I thought that Tuesday was definitely a quirky character to go with her name. She has goals and ambitions, just like most of us and she struggles with making the best decision, though she also knows when she won’t compromise. I give Taylor Sullivan props for how she finishes this story, it’s not tradition, but it’s truly perfect for these characters.
