A friend of mine recommended that I read, “Waking the Lion.” It sounded interesting, so I thought, why not. It has been many years since I last read a romance novel. I wasn’t expecting much and as I began reading, it took me a little while to “get” the authors writing style. Ms. Hightower has a unique writing style that I had never come across before. I began to appreciate it more and more as I read on. The two main characters ‘Kass’ and ‘Rhett’ are like day and night. Rhett was the dark one because of a lost love, and Kass was like sunshine in comparison. I immediately took her side, and wanted Kass to dump his rear in a grinder. I’ve seen this play out in life, and always wondered why women are attracted to men like Rhett? Oh, he was a handsome man, an athlete, a troubled man, and hating the world. Kass deserved far better. Rhett hated her from the beginning. She was the kind of trouble he wanted to avoid. Rhett was living in a dark place when Kass came to his door and shown on him the sweet light that he had once known with his lost love.

This is her 5th book and I can honestly and proudly say I have read them all. Ms Hightower has done it again with this one. Although there is very little humor in contrast to her other books she more than makes up for it with the mystery in this one. I eagerly await her next one.

I started this book expecting some serious heat, and Hightower didn’t disappoint in that department. However, I was pleased brought more to the table than spicy sex scenes. I was invested in both the heroine and hero from the beginning. Kass , a hair stylist, is a realistic character that most women can relate to. Though she’s bowled over by Rhett-a big time hockey star-she plays it cool.

Of course, that drives him nuts. Rhett thinks the love he had with his deceased wife was his only shot. Kass brings him out of his grief induced downward spiral. Their journey is a fast and hot read. I highly recommend.
