But her friend seemed to have other plans. While Lyssa wanted a deeper relationship, Kyle had decided to let her go, thinking he would only be a hindrance to Lyssa's success and happiness. Of course, Lyssa was devastated. In USA, she poured her time to work. But someone had shown interest in her and soon she was torn with her feelings. Was it time for her to move on from Kyle? But what if Kyle wanted to get her back?
This is a love story that feels good. I liked Lyssa's story, her struggles with alcoholism and broken heart made her very human to me. Her character was relatable and flawed, but that's what made her enticing and personable. Kyle, oh, this man was selfless, the kind of man worth introducing to your parents. He is someone every girl would want to meet. (Oh, I like that he was also great in resolving internet security problems too!)
Waking Up To Love woke up some feelings in my heart after reading. Katie O'Boyle wrote a cute love story that made me smile after a crazy weekend. Simply beautiful!
Set in England (Cornwall and London) and Upstate New York (Tomkins Falls in the Finger Lakes), the story takes Lyssa, the main protagonist, through the thralls, disappointments, and emotions of love. An important ingredient in Waking, as in all O’Boyle’s Lakeside stories, is alcoholism, which complicates immensely the roller-coaster ride of love.
More than one character is an alcoholic, so that when Lyssa needs help with the program, or understanding advice from another member, she has it. There are very interesting and educational, actually, insights, via these characters and their interactions, into the dangers, threats and pitfalls of alcoholism. This reader has new respect for their struggles for recovery and their repeated survivals.
Lyssa and her lover, Kyle, are not your average high school sweethearts. They each have a doctorate and are engaged in very authentic and well-researched university environments. The intrigue in the plot begins and ends in that environment, but the journey is fraught with cunning and danger. (Watch out for Rand, another PhD.)
Every loving couple has hurdles to manipulate and overcome in their development of a trusting and lasting relationship, but O’Boyle puts a completely new and different bent on that growth evolution in Waking Up to Love. I won’t spoil any surprises for the reader by divulging more.
But you won’t be disappointed.
