It's the sweetest book I've read all year. Kathy writes what she knows. Spanish and Spanglish words and family interaction create characters that are completely believable and remind you of people you know. Her fluency in Craftese is established without a doubt. It starts off being a story about Estrella, a young woman who's enthusiasm gets ahead of her perseverance and the problems she causes by a night out drinking with her cousin. The reporter assigned to do the story about one of those problems is Chloe, an ambitious woman with a plan to become a craft maven even though she truly hates crafts. Estrella's best friend Ofie is a dedicated crafter without much actual talent.
The conflict in the story is realistic, born of misunderstandings and human behavior.
When you reach the end of this wonderfully witty and sweet story you really like all the characters, appreciate them and believe in them. I also loved the romance in here for being realistic and not full of manufactured drama. Too many books seem to be all about what leads up to the wedding, not about the friendship, trust and support necessary to create a lasting loving relationship. This story has two such relationships in it. As someone deeply in love with my husband after over a decade, I find those sorts of things in stories all too rare.
You'll also probably want to cover something in glitter. But all of Kathy's books inspire me that way. When I finished reading this I had a huge smile on my face and promptly recommended it to friends. Wonderful first novel and I'm looking forward to her next one!
The Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo has been writing books for years instructing her fans in various crafty techniques. Her latest foray into writing strays from the instructional path to a novel, and it's my opinion that she has created a whole new genre of fiction: Crafty Fiction. It's a novel like no other that I've read. Kathy melds her love of crafting with a beautiful story of love, friendship, loss, and hope. She's artfully created characters that you come to care for throughout the novel.
There's Estrella "Star" Esteban, the main character. She's free spirited, fun, and artistic, but a bit flighty...at first. She's done something terrible, and she needs to prove to her parents, friends, and most of all herself, that she can be the person she envisions herself to be.
Her best friend Ofelia is a craftaholic who doesn't seem to have any real talent at the projects she attempts until she takes a long, hard look at herself and finds her calling.
And there's Chloe Chavez, a local TV reporter locally known as Crafty Chloe, who has grand plans of becoming a crafting mogul. The only problem there is, though, is that she hates crafts, and the life plan she's created for herself isn't her own.
The supporting characters of Star's parents and boyfriend, Ofelia's husband, daughter, and mother-in-law, and Chloe's work associates and boyfriend help to round out the characters in a cohesive manner that adds life and vitality to this book.
For several years I've followed Kathy's career through her books, TV appearances, and on the internet. Her good nature, encouragement, and belief that anyone is crafty have been an inspiration to me. I hope her fingers are ready for more novels like this one, because I'm one of many fans who want to see more!

Craft celebrity and design guru Kathy Cano-Murillo has written one of the most glittery feel good craftacular debut novels in memory. It's a fun filled romp through the wild world of crafting and the bustling arts and craft scene in Phoenix, Arizona. Main character Estrella "Star" Esteban is a lovable hot mess of a girl with plenty of energy but little direction. As the novel opens, Star loses her one true love, her job and the respect of her family through an ill-fated and ill advised drunken spray paint rampage and spends the remainder of the novel working to get back all of the things she's lost. In the process, she finds true friendship, the meaning of true love and most importantly she finds herself.
Ms. Murillo is a wonderful writer with a breezy style that is easy and enjoyable to read. She has a playful sense of humor and fun and a vivid imagination. This isn't a novel for the terminally serious, it's filled with copious amounts of whimsy and wonder and lots of crafty references. Ms. Murillo has created larger than life characters that manage to be entirely believable and even the most outrageous scenes in the book feel totally real. It's impossible not to fall in love with the introverted and craft challenged Ofie who longs desperately for acceptance but is saddled with an unnatural love of glitter and a horrific sense of design. You'll find yourself cheering out loud when she accidentally finds her true craft calling. You can't help but be drawn to Crafty Chloe, a wannabe Martha Stewart who can't craft her way out of a paper bag, especially once she gets her well deserved due and rises to the occasion with grace and dignity. You'll root for Star to find her true calling and win back rising artist Theo, her charming and handsome former flame. We all know people like the characters in this book and that makes it easy to relate to them.
What happens when you take 350 pounds of accidental glitter, 3 strong women in search of themselves, a huge project for a major craft event and a series of seemingly insurmountable crises and you mix them up in the mind of a craft industry insider like Murillo? You get crafty gold! Ms. Murillo is hard at work on a series of Crafty Lit novels and I'm personally looking forward to the next one with glittered breath.
