Judging a Book by it's Cover:
The eyes are automatically drawn to the cuffs and badge, as well as the word Vegas. Slowly, your eyes are drawn upward to a naked male torso on the upper half sort of blending into the shadows, but with just enough accent to define him. The synopsis was interesting and I love a man in uniform, so here's hoping it's a good read! ;)
Third-person POV novella, originally released as part of the SUMMER BIGGER THAN OTHERS anthology. Reed's a Las Vegas cop, working the night shift. He'd recently quit a relationship in which he was cheated on and been angry and anti-social since. Grant's in Vegas to try to prove to his a-hole ex that he, in fact, is not boring and was worthy of love... not that his ex cares, the jerk's already moved on and is vacationing in Mexico! These two guys are loving and lovable, and deserve to be treated with kindness and caring. Often, in a novella this short, the couple have history to help support the quickie hookup, but this is not the case here. It all happens real fast, but somehow manages to feel real, believable, natural. Maybe it's the whole "trust him, he's a cop" thing that Reed has going on, I don't know, but I did not find myself questioning the speed of progression. The dialogue and interaction throughout also felt right and not forced. There was not a lot of depth and complexity to this little short story, but it flowed quite nicely and was over before I knew it. A few conflicts of minor proportion were introduced and handled expediently, however the biggest concern was the ending... it implies that there is a HEA, but the long-tern logistics are not worked out for the reader to feel secure in their future. Overall, it's a cute, fun, super quick read. I enjoyed it, but wished there'd been just a little more.

Officer Reed Weston is tired, he’s got about an hour left of his graveyard shift and all he wants is to go home to bed! Reed and his partner are waiting in line to get a cold drink when the owner asks them to check on a drunk customer who has fallen asleep leaning against the wall. When they wake up Grant Carroll to make sure he’s ok Grant can’t believe how good-looking policemen are in Vegas! When Grant refuses to go back to his motel Reeds partner decides to use Reed as bait, he saw how Grant reacted to his partner so he tells Grant Reed will give him a kiss if he goes with them back to his motel. Reed wants nothing to do with the idea. It soon becomes apparent he’s going to have to agree just to get Grant moving. Luckily for Reed, Grant is asleep before his head hits the pillow.
When Grant wakes up the next morning he’s absolutely mortified by the way he behaved. When he finds Reeds card with a note to call he decides he may as well get his apology over with. When Reed agrees to let him take him to lunch he can’t believe how badly he acted the night before he had stamps from a lot of nightclubs, thankfully he doesn’t really remember a great deal about what happened! As they’re eating lunch Grant discovers that Reed is also coming to terms with the fact that his ex is nothing more than a cheat and he has everything his ex doesn’t compassion, intelligence and huge biceps! Both Reed and Grant are insanely attracted to each other but Grant is only in Vegas for the weekend. After spending the weekend in bed having the hottest, most satisfying sex they can ever remember they both realise they need to assess whether they’re prepared to take the biggest gamble of their lives and take a risk on each other.
Waking Up in Vegas is a very engaging short story about two heartbroken men who are at different stages of getting over their ex’s. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to all who have a love for m/m romance.
