This is a very accessible, very readable history of Wales for someone unfamiliar with the country, its culture or its past. A joy to read, actually. We ordered it in desperation after getting bogged down slogging through Davies'
A History of Wales
which is for insiders already familiar with the place and readily able to pronounce the Welsh names. Weisser anglicizes the names for easy reading. On the other hand, it's nice to have the Davies' book as well. We will now return to it in hopes that we're better prepared to continue.

I have a PhD in history. This is not a bad introduction to a country which I knew nothing about. The fact of historical chronology are all there in dull prose with little local color or human feeling for the people. If you want to know a basic historical outline it is fine but will not grab your attention.

Wales: An Illustrated History (Hippocrene Illustrated Histories) by Henry Weisser

Maybe this is typical for this series of Illustrated histories by the publisher, but this is book hardly gives an overview of Welsh history. The reader feels rushed through topics that are barely explained in the first place. This is history is supposed to be for non-Welsh, non-British Islers but is so dumbed down that you feel as if you are not getting the most basic of backgrounds. The reading is boring and the narrative is dry. If you want a basic history of Wales you might be better off getting the tour book version which is at least more engaging. BTW, illustrated means mealy black and white photographs that you might have actually tossed if you had visited Wales yourself and were going through your photos. Would not recommend.

I was looking for a book about Welsh history, but since I know that it can be confusing and very detailed and I did not know much myself, I wanted to start with something more brief and concise. I found this book to be an excellent resource. It is filled with excellent information from all periods of Welsh history and I found it to be very concise and interesting. If you are looking into learning about Welsh history whether it be to travel to Wales or researching your genealogy this is an excellent place to start looking for information. I was really impressed with all I learned from this book and I found it much easier to move on to more detailed, involved books about Welsh history.

I've wanted to learn about Welsh history for a long time but was intimidated buy those 700+ page books.
This book is great as a brief overview of Welsh history but is still smartly written.

I liked it, although the writer had a bit of an attitude at the onset about writing a history for non-academics. Initially, he wrote down to us as if we were third graders and he was above it all. Thankfully, he got over his "tone" and wrote the book. It turned out to be a great little history of Wales with just the right amount of detail to provide someone like me, who is researching my genealogy, the political and cultural happenings at the times of my people.

A nice start for learning about Wales. Easy to read, but will need to look elsewhere for details about the Welsh character.

Disappointing read.

The purpose of the book is to introduce North Americans to Wales in as simple a way as possible. Unfortunately, the book is seriously marred by a large number of incorrectly labelled photographs and omission of essential details
