The best, most objective description and analysis of complex relationships among many armed factions during Axis occupation of Slovenia, 1941-45. For the first time the seemingly simple concept of "collaboration" is thoroughly and objectively examined and defined. The emerging picture is anything, but black and white. What has commonly been overlooked by other writers on this controversial subject are historic relationships of Slovenes with neighboring powers such as Austro/Germany, Italy, Hungary, Serbia and even France. This background, included in Kranjc's book, together with a good assessment of Slovene political party system prior to WWII, enables a reader to better understand developments that followed the Axis invasion and it's ultimate defeat. Throughout the book some comparisons are made with conditions in other Axis-occupied countries, particularly France, Slovakia, Poland and Greece. The book will provide useful insights to a reader whether he/she be steeped in "official", or emigre-produced literature on the subject.

this is the best book on this subject and is long overdue. generally unbiased (aside from the image on the cover) which is unusual for this topic. a scholarly work and not suitable for the reader with either no previous knowledge or only a casual interest in the events of this period.

Excellent account of what took place in that part of the world, obscure or unknown to most Americans but very real to those who were forced to live through it all.
