I finished it only because I had already wasted the money on it and needed a book to read at the pool and beach that I didn't mind getting wet or ruined.
If you're looking for a day to day account of what it is to hike the trail, or a "how-to" sort of book, there are better options out there. Though the trail is certainly documented, it is not the true focus of this book.
I appreciated the insights that the relationship struggle added to the book. A lot of hikers are struggling with something, even if it's not a bad relationship, and I felt that the relationship low points helped to illuminate some of the tough mental states that many thru hikers experience during their journey. It's not always nature or the sheer effort of walking a long distance that makes the journey a difficult one. Though I did the trail in a very different manner I still found that this book captured some moments of my experience that I haven't seen included in other trail books.
The author was honest about her flaws and her perspectives.
Can't wait to follow more of her writing on her blog. And who knows, maybe this will be turned into a movie someday; it definitely has the potential!
