Editorial Reviews

Review

"As a pastor, I highly recommend putting this gospel-centered book into the hands of anyone devastated by marital unfaithfulness." (Robert K. Cheong ~ Pastor of Care and Counseling, Sojourn Community Church, Louisville, Kentucky)

"Lara Williams teaches and reminds her readers that we are not in control, but God is, and as we accept God's sovereignty and goodness, this radically changes how we view our relationship with Him, how we view ourselves, our circumstances, and how we view and relate to others." (Jane Tooher ~ Ministry Department, Director of the Priscilla and Aquila Centre, Moore Theological College, Sydney, Australia)

"Lara Williams' testimony of God's faithfulness in the midst of the darkness of her broken marriage challenges and encourages us to take God at His Word." (Diana Lynn Severance ~ A historian with broad experience teaching in universities and seminaries, Spring, Texas)

"This is no mere "winning-through" story. It is about how theology changes lives. It brings big doctrines into home and marriage and the choices we make every day. Very relevant and very good thinking." (Ann Benton ~ Author and family conference speaker, Guildford, England)

To Walk or Stay was not exactly what I expected, judging from the title. What I thought would be a book about a woman's coming to terms with either leaving a marriage or staying turned out to be something else; and it was a good something else.

This book, instead of being a chronicle of what went wrong in Williams' marriage, is a story of how throwing herself upon Christ and His word gave her exactly what she needed when she chose to stay in her marriage following her husband's adultery. This book is for more than just those in a difficult marriage; these truths are essential for all women.

Williams identifies her own sins as well as how she coped with them and relied on Scriptural truths to heal. She admits freely to the tendency to want to control her husband, to idolize him, and to find her sufficiency in a perfect marriage. She describes how she felt peace about staying after she struggle with feeling like she had a right to leave. She also talks about the process of learning to forgive and to be patient in waiting for things to heal. Her conclusions will provide inspiration for women in similar situations, but the conclusions she comes to regarding her sufficiency in Christ are for all women. Married women are not the only ones prone to controlling or idolizing relationships.

One strength of her book is identifying the reality that women (and men) often go into marriage with very faulty thinking. She talks a lot about the insecurities she brought to her marriage, and the error of assuming that marriage would fix those things. I think many women go into marriage believing that their husbands are going to constantly be the knight in shining armour, only to see him fall from the pedestal.

Lara's words hit home. And not only hit home, but launched me straight into a deeper place with God. Present difficulty in marriage, or not, this book is a tool in the hand of God to take the reader into His heart during tough times. Lara is transparent yet hopeful, even in the hardest of times because she has found God to be enough. Period. He is enough, and we can find Him to be our rock when everything around us is falling apart. This book is an amazing story of REAL ACTIVE POWERFUL GRACE at work in the lives of a normal family like mine. I was challenged, comforted, inspired, and equipped as I read this book, and am sure others will be too.

With the backdrop of infidelity and the question of whether to reconcile a broken marriage, Lara walks the reader through the journey of sanctification.

For Lara she learned to follow God through the valley of infidelity. But the Truth and scripture presented in this book will guide any woman through her own valley. Lara clearly presents theology of sin...in us all. Shares her own struggle with control and rebellion. She is vulnerable about how she longed for the perfect husband and held that longing up as an idol.

More than anything Lara directs the reader to seek God in all things. ALL things. She highlights the power and importance of the Holy Spirit in helping us in our daily struggles. Scripture is seamlessly thread throughout the book. For me personally her chapter on the power of prayer brought me to my knees.

I would highly recommend this book for any woman who is struggling with a broken marriage. But I would also recommend it for any woman who wants to grow in her intimacy and dependence on God. Lara's book is a true discipleship tool.

Lara shares her beautiful story of of heartache and redemption in her book To Walk or Stay. She shares about how she allowed God to transform her heart and mind through some of the darkest days of her life---and how He used that transformation to bring her to a beautiful place both personally and relationally. I would highly recommend this book to women in all walks of life. Yes, her story begins with the discussion of her husband's affair, but it's deeper and richer than that. It's not about his affair, it's about how God used that to open Lara's heart to her Savior, and to her husband. A true true picture of redemption, healing, and forgiveness! It's a MUST READ!

To walk or stay is a choice every married woman will face. Now, some of you single folks may think I am crazy to have said that, and CERTAINLY the lost-in-love-engaged can't believe a time will ever come where they would want to walk away from their beloved.

Reality is: marriage is HARD.

Put two sinners together there are bound to be problems, and without a steadfast commitment to your marriage and to walking with God, any one of us can find ourselves in a place where we are ready to walk away -- even if we swore we never would.

Lara has poured out her soul in her first published book, To Walk or Stay, an account of how she walked through infidelity and betrayal in her marriage . . . and stayed.

Lara has a gift for words and a commitment to speaking truth. This is a book you will not be able to put down. Not just because of the beautiful way this word-crafter has shaped her story, but because you will find yourself in the middle of her struggles. You see, this book is not about Lara's marriage; It is a testimony of the God who carried, shaped, and loved Lara through her "shattered hopes and suffocating fears."

So, why does every woman need to read this book? Here are just a few reasons:

-Regardless of your marital status, you have baggage. Single ladies, you may not realize it yet, but you do. You also have expectations of what a marriage should look like, what your man should be like and how he should act. Lara shares with us her own baggage and expectations which negatively affected her marriage.

-We all need the constant reminder to cling to God and choose to follow Him in obedience, regardless of our circumstances.
