This book brought to life for me stories of a truly historic pioneer family who in 1855 settled in what is now Roseville.
As I read, I could actually close my eyes and imagine myself walking in the exact footsteps the early Fiddyment family walked in, long before their precious land was overtaken by 20th and 21st Century development. I also now know where Fiddyment Road got its name! The story, as told by her great grandson, of a 19th Century widow with a toddler son, braving sea and land crossing to come to California is truly an amazing tale. The book left me wanting to learn the stories of other Placer County pioneers and the role they played in settling in this area in the 1800s. Great historic pictures also of the Roseville area.

Ms. Richter is a thoughtful writer who enjoys sharing the rich meaningful lives of generations of families who endured both hardships and celebratory times over the years. The story is detailed with documents and photos to help us understand and imagine the lives of the generations of the Fiddyment family. After reading the book and meeting the Fiddyments' at a special luncheon, I think the foundation of the book reflects the great love this couple has shared for decades. It's a wonderful book!!

Writing family stories is not easy, and getting the details is what makes it interesting. This author has done amazing research and was fortunate to have living memories from which to draw the stories. I would recommend this book especially to residents of the Sacramento area, and to all who are interested in pioneer history. It is also a useful example for anyone wanting to research and write their own ancestry journal.

The telling of the Fiddyment family story is a gift not only to the Fiddyments, but to those who reside in northern California and appreciate the rich history that surrounds them. The story of Elizabeth, the family matriarch who ventured from Illinois to California gold country as a young widowed mother, is an inspiring tale of adventure and “true grit.” Photographs, letters, maps, news articles, and the author’s thorough research bring the story to life, and inspire this reader to keep better family records!

The author's love of local history and her painstaking research are on full display in this book. Christina Richter's friendship with the Fiddyment family, and David Fiddyment in particular, resulted in the sharing of timeless stories that keep this family's history alive. The book is a true gift to the Fiddyment family and to all of us who live in the area they call home and for anyone else who is passionate about recording our precious past.
