You need to watch a few videos on YouTube before you buy this. Look for assembly and setup/initialization vids.They will help make the instructions clearer. The assembly instructions included are a joke and you have to download the good instructions from the internet. THIS IS NOT A TOY!! There is extensive programming that has to be done before flying. Even though it is listed as "ready to fly" there is a lot of assembly required. Ready to fly means there is no soldering or fabrication of parts required. Mine came with a gimbal and extra blades. I would recommend ordering blade guards, blades and a battery. Be aware that carbon fiber blades for this are shorter and reduce flight time because they provide less lift and work the motors harder.

Be very careful not to trust the reviews or photos. This quad does not come with the gimbal. Make sure to read the fine print carefully. I purchased the walkera over the phantum because I thought it came with a free gimbal. It does not. Mine also came with a plug for the charger that does not work in the USA. I contacted the company and they didn't have one for it. I had to go out and buy an adaptor.

High performance, but takes some learning: a comparison

With that in mind, I thought it most useful to compare the two - which, I believe, are currently the best two options for entry-level quadcopters.

First off, a matter of value. The Phantom is $200 cheaper - and easier to fly out of the box. If you want the quickest, cheapest entertainment possible, go for the Phantom.

But the story doesn't end there. The Walkera has several advantages over the Phantom that will interest a more serious hobbyperson. Specifically, the Walkera is faster, includes a gimbal ($100 value), and has about 2x the battery life. Which, for $200, is a pretty good deal.

Of course, it isn't perfect - the better performance comes at a bit of an ease-of-flying cost. You can push its limits further - which means it's also easier to push them too far. Additionally, its hover functionality isn't quite as reliable as the Phantom's: with the Phantom, putting the throttle stick in the middle indicates that you want it to maintain altitude (which is incredibly useful!) - with the Walkera, it roughly maintains position, but you still have to control throttle. It's far too easy to accidentally rocket the Walkera up into the sky - or have it plummet towards ground.

So, in the end, it's not just a matter of price vs performance. It's a matter of how comfortable you are flying quadcopters. If this is your first time, I recommend the Phantom - it has more safeguards in place (though, despite these, I've still crashed it several times). The Walkera is certainly worth the extra money, but only if you're comfortable flying something a bit more on the edge.
