The trouble is just how much music is missing. Given that the show has been out for seven years -- with season 8 beginning this Sunday -- and given that this is a single CD collection -- albeit filled to the absolute brim with 75 minutes of music -- there was no way every iconic piece was going to make the cut. Really powerful tracks such as "Sophia" and "Farm Invasion" were practically gimmies, but there's an awful lot of great content missing.
I don't know what took so long for this to be released; a lot of McCreary's shows get annual releases per season, but fans have been begging for a Walking Dead soundtrack for nearly a decade. It's good that we've finally gotten it, but it would have been nice if it'd been a multi disc collection. Perhaps if we're lucky we'll get a Volume 2 next year, but I won't exactly hold my breath for it.
Regarding the physical release: it's a little disappointing that the CD comes in a digi pack as opposed to a traditional jewel case. The inside cover image features a single page of liner notes from McCreary, which are nice, but not nearly as detailed as one might like. The booklet is a couple of pages of (black and white) photos with no text at all. It feels like that space could have been utilized for more extensive liner notes.
The Walking Dead - Original Television Soundtrack is a great collection of Bear McCreary's score from the TV show, but seven years on it seems a little bit anemic when compared to the sheer amount of quality tracks that were left off due to space limitations. Here's hoping for a Volume 2 in the future.
This is still just an appetizer and I think most Soundtrack afficianados would agree, we want a more complete release. We want an OST that is on equal footing to something that would be put together by La-La Land as far as completeness for the first 7 seasons. So much of Bear McReary's score is just not available for us to enjoy. YouTube compilations do not count.
