Product Description
The Walking Dead video game takes the undead and brings them out of the AMC Emmy award-winning TV show and into console gaming systems in a new, terrifying way. Terminal Reality’s first-person action game will allow players to assume the role of the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon on an unforgiving quest to the supposed safety of Atlanta. The iconic walkers will relentlessly hunt down players like their television counterparts using a combination of sight, sound, and smell. As Daryl, players will need to tread carefully throughout each new area they explore. Once discovered, it doesn’t take much to attract an unstoppable horde of undead walkers, so every threat needs to be assessed, and every situation analyzed. No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside, alongside his overbearing brother Merle, in this new, post-apocalyptic world.

To start, the graphics aren't HD high quality or top of the line. Though I don't think that's a bad thing in this case, the graphics though standard do give it a gritty and grimy look that you see in the TV series. I've seen several reviews say that the colors are pale and not very vibrant, which is a good thing for a horror survival in my opinion, it takes away from the feel of the gameplay. All in all the game is very functional and visually good going from light and dark areas using your flashlight in night missions or dark buildings which does give it a realistic feel.
Gameplay is a little stiff but functional after you get used to it but more importantly it's not broken, it's very functional and I haven't encountered any issues with the game yet. The controls seemed well thought out with the D-Pad going over your health and distraction items and the Y (if XBOX) cycling through your weapons instead of the D-Pad handling both and being a pain like some games. When I first started playing I wanted to complain about the Zombies respawning in already cleared areas but after playing for a while I realized it's more suspenseful and a little realistic. If you leave a door open to a building your in, doesn't mean a zombie can't just waltz in and bite your face off which makes you check your 6 allot. The gameplay is repetitive but so is every other game, so it's hard to knock a game for keeping continuity especially in a survival game. The biggest point about this game is that it feels like a survival game having to be sparing on your ammo, resources and fuel.
I gave this game 5 stars overall because it's entertaining and to me holds my attention and certain areas are challenging when trying not to alert a small herd and finding the safe routes to get to the objective. There's allot of reviews saying Cash and Grab or profiting on a name or following, which isn't nothing new, and I would agree with it if the game was sold for $60 but it's half the price and I think I'm 4 hours into it and not even done with the first act. The game isn't perfect but it's true to the roots of the series and in my opinion worth the money. If your not willing to spend $30 then renting is probably the better way to go but if your a fan I would suggest giving it a playthrough.
The game is a first person shooter that is quite linear in its presentation. The only decisions players get to make are driving South or Driving East, or which survivors to dismiss when you run out of seats in the car. As I mentioned, there is absolutely no character development in the game so you really don't care whether a survivor lives or dies. In the Telltale game, you were passionate about the ancillary characters. You either really liked them or really hated them. There were only a couple throughout the entire game who promoted indifference. Regardless of decisions made, ultimately you wind up in the same location. This is not a free-roam game, as once you're done with a location you can't return during the same playthrough. The game mechanics are terrible and inconsistent. One moment you may be sniping a walker from 50 feet, and as soon as you pull the trigger a seemingly empty area has spawned 40 walkers who are right on top of you.
As you move from area to area, there are collectibles to gather (Posters, Stuffed Squirrels and Car Keys) which other than car keys, add nothing to the storyline, but are put in for achievements. The car keys are in place because they provide access to different vehicles. Notice I didn't say upgraded vehicles, which would make some sense. The different vehicles have a specific number of passenger seats and inventory slots for storing items. I went from having a vehicle with 14 slots and 3 passenger seats, (The 2 main characters, Darryl and Merle Dixon don't take seats, they just "are.") to a car with only 10 inventory slots and 2 passenger seats. There was no way to go back to a previous vehicle, which meant I needed to dump 2 items and 1 passenger to continue. Illogical. Keep in mind that inventory items include everything from weapons, ammo, meds and gasoline which stack. If you exceed a certain # of an item, it expands to a 2nd inventory slot. Also, different ammo take separate slots.
If not for wanting achievements, (face it, most of us want them) you are better off using melee weapons and/or the crossbow once you receive it, as firing any type of gun almost immediately has you surrounded by walkers. As the main character (Darryl Dixon) you also have 10 personal inventory slots. The final thing I will say is that since gear, gasoline and meds are so important to the game if they are going to "reduce" inventory slots they should make items along the way more common or readily available.
BOTTOM LINE rent this if you can, and better yet check out the TELLTALE game. It's more enjoyable and well done.
