- The world we knew is gone. The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility. An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months society has crumbled: no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, the survivors are forced to finally start living.
- As the survivors settle into their prison home something has drawn them out into the open... out of the prison... out of their sanctuary. This is a major turning point for the overall story of The Walking Dead, setting the stage for years to come.

About the author

First and foremost a comic creator, Kirkman has seen groundbreaking success in the adaptation of his comic book titles into major franchises in all forms of content. In 2010, his Eisner award winning series, The Walking Dead, was developed into an AMC television series. It has become a worldwide phenomenon as the highest-rated basic cable drama of all time and is the #1 show on television among the coveted 18-49 demo. The property has also been extended into a blockbuster game franchise, licensing business and ongoing publishing success.
Kirkman also serves as consulting producer of The Talking Dead, the popular talk show hosted by Chris Hardwick that deep dives into each week’s episode of both The Walking Dead and its companion series Fear the Walking Dead. Kirkman is co-creator, writer and producer of The Walking Dead’s companion series, Fear the Walking Dead.
He is also executive producer of the AMC series Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics, and the Korean pre-apocalyptic drama, Five Year. Kirkman’s popular demonic-exorcism comic, Outcast, was adapted, produced and airs on Cinemax.
For the big screen, Kirkman will produce Invincible based on his long-running popular comic book. The project will be written, directed and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Universal Pictures. Other credits include AIR featuring Norman Reedus and Academy Award nominee, Djimon Hounsou.
Additional Kirkman comics include Super Dinosaur, Battle Pope, Astounding Wolf-Man, and Thief of Thieves.
Robert is also the Chairman of Skybound Entertainment. Robert, an advocate for creator rights, co-founded Skybound alongside his longtime business and producing partner David Alpert in an effort to ensure creators are able to maintain their intellectual property rights and creative control.

The Walking Dead Volume 5 continues the story of Police Officer Rick Grimes and his band of normal-world-refugees as they become more settled into the new home that they found in Volume 3. Volume 5 begins after many months have passed since The Walking Dead epidemic started, and all of the characters are now reluctantly beginning to accept that their home is not the only thing that's new. Their entire existence is new: New families. New friends. New daily routines. New rules to live by. New world.
And venturing out into the new world is dangerous. The confines and security provided by the character's new home are less than safe. But outside the gates await unfathomable chaos and horror; hordes of the undead, along with survivors in desperate situations that will do the unthinkable to stay alive (or entertained).
I'm not a regular comic book reader. But I was drawn to The Walking Dead by the volume releases that bring the convenience of being able to get several chapters of the story without the month to month waiting for each issue. And I am now hooked.
The volume releases of The Walking Dead are like reading a screenplay with storyboards of a version of Night of the Living Dead that began simultaneously, but in a different part of the country. Yes, it's kind of a rip-off of a story (stories) already told, but the key is that it's done very very well. The zombies are true to the original Romero creation: slow and stupid as opposed to the 28 Days Later (2002) or 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead fast and thinking zombies.
Each volume takes under an hour to get all the way through, and they leave you wanting more. So it's bittersweet to now be caught up to where I'm through all of the released material, and now have to wait for the subsequent volume releases.
Volumes 1, 2, 3 & 4 are all also available individually. A hard cover edition of volume 1 & 2 is out and a hard cover edition of volumes 3 & 4 is scheduled for early 2007. Volume 6 is scheduled for release the last week of February 2007; I have no info on a hard cover release of volumes 5 & 6, but I'm sure that it will happen if you prefer to wait.
So anyone in need of a very well done zombie fix that you don't put into your DVD player should absolutely get down with The Walking Dead sickness. Add it to your cart, but be sure to start with volume 1 and read them chronologically.
Glenn discovers the prison's armory and is eager to test the gear out. Using the gear, the group decides to siphon the gasoline out of the cars in the parking lot and get the prison generator running and re-fill Dale's RV. Then Rick and Glenn spot a helicopter in the sky which crashes. Rick and Glenn are joined by Michonne and the trio sets out to see if there are any survivors and possibly new information. The follow the survivor's tracks to a town called Woodbury. There they are brought to a section of the town that has been cleared of the undead where they meet a man called The Governor. He appears friendly and pleasant, but soon reveals his true nature. There are a couple of completely shocking twists and the volume ends on a cliffhanger.
In the previous two volumes, Rick and his group learned that other humans could be far more deadly and dangerous than zombies. In THE BEST DEFENSE, we are shown exactly how dangerous other people can be in the form of The Governor. The Governor commits atrocities in THE BEST DEFENSE that not even Titus Andronicus and his children had to endure. He also keeps his people entertained by a series of gladiator-type games. Oh, and then there's his own little personal entertainment device that he keeps at home.
"The Walking Dead" slowed down a little in the two previous volumes, but things pick up really quickly in THE BEST DEFENSE. The safe life that Rick and his company thought they might have living in the prison is seen to be an illusion that will be shattered by The Governor. In his mind, the best defense is a good offense and that means eradicating or destroying anything that enters into your zone.

Found this series a little tiring in a way, because all the characters die after a while, so you sometimes wonder what the point of following them is - at least on the TV series they occasionally have a few weeks of peace on a farm or starting a community in a prison.
But my main complaint is that I did not think of the idea first - I started writing a zombie novel only to discover these graphic novels had got there first, rendering my idea redundant!
Brilliant! The deviations from the TV series grow with each passing comic book (while keeping the general story the same). Volume 5 just piles those differences in. I found myself reading on and by the end, I am so intrigued as to where they go with certain characters/ predicaments. it does get pretty intense during the middle of the book which just adds to the brilliance!
