2020 release. The British post-punk/pop group arrived like a breath of fresh air with their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album, Love In The 4th Dimension back in April 2017. Fronted by Juliette Jackson, The Big Moon unleashed song after song fizzing with melody and charm. This, their second album, was recorded in Atlanta alongside Grammy-winning US Producer Ben H. Allen III (M.I.A./Deerhunter/Bombay Bicycle Club).

The catchy and urgent indie guitar numbers are mostly absent in favour of a well produced pop sound which is just....meh!
I listened through maybe three or four times and nothing sticks. It is perhaps the worst insult for an album but this is simply very boring.
Bands needs to move on and can’t simply release the same albums year after year but there is a trend towards this pop sheen at the moment.
It’s an oversaturated market and damn it even Sleater Kinney had a crack with their last album and failed!
Not for me I’m afraid, I prefer a little more grit.
Doesn't quite top their Acoustic EP, but that's a personal preference.
I brought vinyl (orange edition). A well presented album comes with an A3 poster, fold out outer sleeve and inner sleeve printed with lyrics and a picture. Another huge positive is it came with a download code for both mp3 and uncompressed WAV versions.
Only negatives are the inner sleeve is not lined with an anti-static plastic liner (these really help stop the record clinging to the sleeve when you try take it out). And Side A of this LP gives my auto-stop record player a headache. Side A runs really close to the label, so must be near the limit of playtime capacity, and this seem to cause my record player to not auto stop. Both minor issues.
I initially went back and forth on whether to buy this as i thought(wrongly) it would probably be more a continuation from their first album, which I enjoyed, but didnt anticipate any major change in style. How wrong I was. This album is a joy and a triumph. The musicianship and overall musicality of the album is pheonominal. So many different styles of song with lots of twists and turns that will leave you beaming from ear to ear. The vocal arrangements are of the highest order and bring the songs to an even higher peak.
The Big Moon have evolved. They have produced an album of such a high standard and is quite simply one of the best i have heard in years. A listening experience of pure joy.
There are some beautiful guitar licks . They have also added more synth music and a touch of drum and bass. All of the girls are multi instrumentalists, which enhances their music. They even through in a bit of psychedelic music. Some of the tracks have a sexy jazz feel to them. As for the vocals, they are ethereal and in some instances ghostly.
This is a multi layered release and deserves high praise. What this CD shows, is the girls can go in which ever direction they wish to, be that indie rock, jazz or rock and then some.
