I use it to adjust the heat of my wood burning and soldering tools for encaustic painting. In fact, I recommend this product as an additional tool!
This temperature control keeps the wax from overheating by keeping the iron cooler.
This temperature regulator allows me to practice with my inexpensive kit pen and the plethora of different tips it came with along with some very inexpensive additional tips I purchased. Since I'm a rank novice at pyrography, I didn't want to succumb to my weakness for tools and go overboard on equipment that may end up sitting idle. By using this add-on regulator, I can legitimately practice many of the techniques outlined in the two pyrography books I purchased from Amazon. Being adept at this hobby and getting professional-looking results will require time, patience, practice and developed skills but being able to lower the temperature at the tip makes all the difference in the world, especially in the detail work, as I'm trying and learning. Without a temperature regulator, the inexpensive single-temp kit pen is simply too hot and it scorches the wood, muddying up the details.
Woodburning aside, it's also a useful temperature regulator for the ubiquitous single tip soldering iron found in virtually every hobby enthusiast's toolbox. Lower heat at the tip combined with a solder that requires a lower temperature to melt will spare the wire, component, etc. from damage caused by unnecessary heat.
