HENRY CLEWS (1834-1923) was born in Staffordshire, England. As a young ambitious man, he moved to Manhattan and became a U.S. citizen, a leading Wall Street financier, and an influential international political operative. The value investor was the original "Sage of Wall Street." More than a century later, his witticisms were repeated and credited to Warren Buffett, the "sage of Omaha." Clews was a prolific writer and historian. He died in his New York home at age of 88, after accumulating one of the largest fortunes in the United States.
