This book is a bit slow at times, but it is an interesting story that keeps you reading and involved in all of the characters and trying to figure out exactly who is responsible for everyone's problems until the end. There is little I hate more than reading a mystery where I've figured out who the villain is by the third or fourth chapter. This is NOT one of those books.
I love finding authors that are new to me and, especially indie authors who have to work harder to get their work out there.
Amber Newberry is an author I will read again.
First and foremost, I couldn't care less about historical fiction. I also can't very much relate to a well bred teenage girl raised in a patrician British family some four hundred years ago. We have little in common, I guess. But somehow, Ms Newberry changed all of that and kept me turning pages. Tamsin Rhineholt (not to be confused with Judge Rhinehold), the protagonist, is one little firecracker (and so much more) trapped inside the body of a young aristocrat and her dialogue is witty and engaging. And don't pat her on the head. She hates that s***.
A few times I felt like I was under dressed while reading this and should have put on my "Sunday best" and continued to enjoy the book with a steaming cup of Earl Grey in the finest of China. But as the story grew and thickened I found myself sucked right in, no longer caring about my ill choices in garb.
If you picked up the paperback copy, don't be intimidated by its size. It reads quickly and you'll find yourself flowing right through it.
Spoiler alert: you'll probably want to punch Julian several times throughout the story. I know I did.
But I decided I'd give it a read, not at all sure if I'd even make it through a chapter.
But wow....I was in for quite a surprise.
I can't say that I didn't put the book down, but I can tell you that I didn't want to.
A well written and thoroughly engrossing story, rich characters, and beautifully described settings make this a fairly quick read that will make you anxious for the next book in the series, and the mystery will keep you guessing until the end.
Great job, Amber!
What more could you ask for?
Amber Newberry's first novel is a historical page turner that will have you in suspense until the very last page. With poetic imagery and riveting character dialog that rivals experienced novelists, "Walls of Ash" will not disappoint even seasoned readers. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel.
