I'm always looking out for inexpensive artisan supplies that are comparable to professional types. This makes the cut. Sure you could get a variable temp. burner, but you'll put in at least $150 from the start...plus extra for tips. This burner is perfect for the beginners to the advanced type. The only flaw I've found is that it takes some practice to get lighter burn colors (achieved by quickly dragging the tool with less pressure)if you are trying to achieve different values. There are plenty of great tips that come with this burner as well. One thing that other less expensive burners lack is the heat guard (metal ring below the tip) and rubber/plastic finger comfort (it's black on this model) that your non-burned fingers will thank you for. I'm a big fan of this product's function and price.

I did not purchase this item on Amazon, but I wanted to leave a review. I purchased this item 2 days ago at JoAnn Fabrics. I used it for the first time yesterday. I practiced wood burning with it for about 20 minutes and it got so hot I couldn't hold it. I turned the tool off, let it cool and decided to try a different tip, as it comes with several different tips/points. I got some pliers (as the directions state to use) and attempted to remove the tip. The tip had melted into the tool. I tried and tried, but could not get the tip out of the tool. I contacted the company yesterday and have yet to hear anything back. Needless to say I'm just a little unhappy about paying $16.00 (originally $29.99, but I had a 50% off coupon) for only 20 minutes of practice. BUT I must say that while it was working, it did a good job.

I've gone through three of these things. They're cheap enough and do a decent job, but I could pretty much get through two or so projects with each one before it was unusable, and I'm no pro. My projects would usually consist of celtic knotwork with some lettering, or a horse or turtle image with lettering. The things I made with it turned out pretty nice, but I could see where a nicer burner would have greatly improved them.

Basically after a while, the thread on the end of the tool just quits holding the tips. Or, they just won't thread in any more and you have to kind of get it wedged in and hope it won't fall out and make a big burn mark on your piece. It's really frustrating to be in the middle of a project and have it junk-out on you.

This year, I've decided to quit wasting time and money on these things, and ask Santa for a serious woodburner. I would say buy one of these to see if pyrography is something you think you'll want to get in to, use it until it breaks, then buy yourself a good one.

I'm giving it two stars because it does kind of work for a little bit (usually two or so months in my case), but I grew tired of their short lived functionality.

This is the 2nd versa-tool I've purchased. The first one didn't have the adjustable heat level dial which I needed. I have an expensive Burn-Master Wood Burning Tool that I love but purchased this to use with the letter and number branding stamps by Walnut-Hollow. Works fantastic and it is perfect for what I needed it for.

I was so excited about using this for some different projects, including doing some woodburning. The tip that came on it, the standard tip, would not unscrew. I tried pliers, vice grips, and yes I was turning in the correct direction. It wouldn't budge, instead the tip started coming apart leaving little metal shards behind. I will be returning this :-(

Very versatile tool. I own other stencil cutters which overheat and after 20 minutes of use the handles become too hot to hold without a glove/wrapping. The thermal control knob on this unit alleviates that. I am able to control heat settings according to the materials that I am using. My only problem is that the knob tends to shift during use so the temp gets lowered without my knowledge. Otherwise, it's a wonderful tool to have.

I have been searching for a tool to carve the foam style pumpkins. the hand tools used for real pumpkins are difficult to work with and leave jagged edges. this tool is perfect...cuts through like butter leaving smooth cutting edges. easy to make intricate cuts...Best purchase for this type of product.

I purchased the Versa tool at Joanns to carve some foam pumpkins from Michaels. The tool is a bit awkward to hold. Just a word of caution if you are carving foam - it is essentially burning the foam, and the vapor caused by this is toxic. I did one pumpkin and felt really sick with a bad headache. I bought a disposable particle mask in order to carve the other pumpkins. I also tried cutting it without the heat on and it cut just as well.
