I bought this wood burner for decorating spoons as Christmas gifts. I bought it because it was Amazon choice. After it shipped I was excited and started reading reviews, apparently there have been major issues with tips breaking off and the handles melting. Oh no!! I was so bummed, I don’t have a lot of money this year and I didn’t have much time to return it and order a different brand. I am a newbie, though artistic by nature I can pretty much teach myself anything - but I didn’t want to invest in an expensive set without trying it first. I decided I was going to use the universal tip only, I think the metal gets so hot it jeopardizes the integrity of the metal tips and they weaken and snap. So there is that learning curb, but I am definitely getting the hang of it. I also decided that I would take breaks and turn the burner off every so often so that it wouldn’t over heat. You can feel this thing getting really hot after 60 minutes or so. I can see if you left it alone without burning the plastic could definitely melt. So I turn it off, cool it down, and then heat it up again. I also only gently tighten the tip when it is cold, otherwise I don’t touch it. Again, integrity of cheap metal. It’s really common sense. I think by doing these things the burner works well. Yeah it’s a bummer I can’t switch the tips without worry of damage, but I’d rather train myself to use the universal tip and have a working tool. In the future I will invest a little money into a burner, but this does the trick. So excited for my gifts!
