The Walt Disney Film Archives Xl: The Animated Movies 1921-1968 Hardcover – Illustrated, October 15, 2016

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 224 ratings

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”—Walt DisneyOne of the most creative minds of the 20th century, Walt Disney created a unique and unrivaled imaginative universe. Like scarcely any other classics of cinema, his astonishing collection of animated cartoons revolutionized storytelling on screen and enchant to this day across geographies and generations. In TASCHEN’s first volume of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on Disney animation, some 1,500 images and essays by eminent Disney experts take us to the beating heart of the studio’s “Golden Age of Animation.” This landmark book traces Disney’s complete animation journey from the silent film era, through his first full-length feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the pioneering artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), right up to his last masterpieces Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) and The Jungle Book (1967).With extensive research conducted through the historical collections of the Walt Disney Company, as well as private collections, editor Daniel Kothenschulte curates some of the most precious concept paintings and storyboards to reveal just how these animation masterpieces came to life. Masterful cel setups provide highly detailed illustrations of famous film scenes while rare pictures taken by Disney photographers and excerpts from story conferences between Walt and his staff bring a privileged insider’s view to the studio’s creative process. Each of the major animated features that were made during Walt’s lifetime—including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians—are given their own focus chapter, without forgetting less familiar gems such as the experimental short films of the Silly Symphonies series and underappreciated episodic musical films such as Make Mine Music and Melody Time, all of which receive the same meticulous research and attention. Many unfinished projects, among them the proposed sequels to the legendary musical Fantasia or a homage to Davy Crockett by painter Thomas Hart Benton, are also highlighted with rarely seen artworks, many of them previously unpublished. Throughout, contributions from leading Disney specialists detail the evolution of each respective film.Realizing the Disney style was a collective project and, as much as the master himself, The Walt Disney Film Archives acknowledges the outstanding animators and designers who influenced the style of the studio, among them Albert Hurter, Gustaf Tenggren, Kay Nielsen, Carl Barks, Mary Blair, Sylvia Holland, Tyrus Wong, Ken Anderson, Eyvind Earle, and Walt Peregoy. First volume of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on Disney animation.Produced with the assistance of the Walt Disney Archives and Disney’s famous Animation Research Library.Covers the Walt Disney journey from the era of silent films through to his final masterpiece The Jungle Book (1967).Includes the first full-length feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the landmark artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), and beloved postwar classics such as Cinderella (1950) and Peter Pan (1953).1,500 illustrations and essays by eminent Disney experts.Masterful cel setups provide highly detailed illustrations of famous film scenes.Remarkable behind-the-scenes insight with excerpts from story conferences with Walt and his staff and rare pictures taken by Disney studio photographers.Copyright © 2016 by Disney Enterprises, Inc.

Yep, I read through the previous reviews, but nothing can prepare you for the size and quality of this book when you open it. The attention to detail from the binding, to the paper to the overall content is amazing. The pages are heavy weight - you don't have to worry about damage from people browsing the book. The illustrations and accompanying narrative are in-depth without being overly "Wordy". The cover illustration calls to anyone who is a Disney fan as the book lays on a table.

I can see this being a cherished book sought out by my grandchildren (When I get some) when they come over. There is enough content and richness to said content to make we want to return again and again to review the book. That is the magic of Disney, to be able to return to their product and always find something a little new.

Overall, I feel like I got a steal of a deal on this. It is that impressive.

This is the kind of Disney book I've hoped would be written, an in depth look at every Disney animated feature and each time period of the Disney studio. It is collaborative effort by several of the key Disney historians. Every feature has its own chapter and the amount of coverage varies (the major films have more pages than the lesser ones). The good news is the lesser films, such as the package films from the 1940's, have more discussion than previous books have given. Some of the chapters end with some samples of transcripts of story meetings on a given sequence, which gives great insight to the studios creative process (a book on this would also make for a great treasure trove).
Each chapter starts with complete staff credits and who voices which character followed by frame grabs from the respective feature, taken from what I presume are current digital restorations. (The frame grabs for Song of the South may be our only glimpse at the film in a fully restored state). Most of the images are of concept art and story sketches, several of which have not been published before (the selling point for me).

This is probably one of the biggest and heaviest Disney art books I've handled. Close to the dimensions of the animation art books by Pierre Lambert. I highly recommend this for any Disney enthusiast; Don't let the price scare you away, it is definitely worth it.
And according to the author, this is only volume one!

I bought this book for my fiance who is a huge fan of Disney and we both are floored by it. The pictures of the book do not do justice to their beauty in reality. We spent over an hour reading it and commenting on the artwork, the detail, the history, the magnificence and the timelessness of the brand, the man, the team, and how Disney is still well known in all generations. Disney still remains the bridge in the gap between years and this book will continue to be revisited by us and a conversation piece to our friends and family alike. When the package arrived we were on our way to a siesta and even admidst our yawns we kept fighting against our bodies time clocks for another glimpse and just one more page. Until we had no choice but to nap. Then we reopened it and our imaginations ran wild again! We highly recommend this book for everyone who loves Disney as much as we do or even just loves history, true stories that inspire awe and motivation, art work and another thing we love about it: having your very own table top museum that you can revisit endlessly and never grows old.

Anyone with more than a passing interest in Disney Animation will find a rich and impressive treasure trove of work that will captivate them for hours at a time. The amount of care and attention placed into this book is near unparalleled: the authors bring fascinating and intriguing information to the table, the selected pieces from the Disney Library are printed with quality, HD clarity, and the overall layout makes for a great adventure in reading and browsing. This is among the ultimate in reference books for Disney's early history. It truly encapsulates all that I personally feel about Walt Disney Animation Studios, being among the best examples of the creative process I know.

I would also like to give a shoutout to the Taschen America outlet, from which I ordered this book from. Super fast delivery and excellent care with the overall packaging. I very much appreciated it!

I have been a fan of Disney animation my entire life, and have collected quite a few books on the subject over the years - but they all pale in comparison to this mega-volume. In addition to the stunning pictures (reproduced at a scale that allows you to see the details), there is a scholarly essay about each film discussing technical aspects, social/historical context, personnel involved, etc. I should add that this NOT a "children's" book; although they might enjoy looking at the pictures, the essays are written more as academic papers than basic narratives. But for an adult Disney fan, this is an absolute treasure. What really excites me is that there will probably be a second volume!

Extraordinary volume... Enormous and bursting at the binding with an endless plethora of images... It's very hard to describe this book, one has to see it to understand it. The night I sat down with it I must've spent 2.5 hours...that alone was mostly skimming. Well worth the price and perfect for any Disney enthusiast!

An absolute treasure for any Disney fan appreciative of the company's history, heritage, and the work of Walt himself. Incredible artwork and lots of insightful text:new content by a variety of film critics and historians who've written about Disney in the past. The book details the actual studios where Walt Disney and his animators worked as well as the films (short and feature) from the Alice Comedies through The Jungle Book. Oft-neglected projects like Silly Symphony shorts beyond The Skeleton Dance (the first), Three Little Pigs (the sensation), and Flowers and Trees (the first in color), Victory Through Air Power, and the famously unavailable Song of the South receive time and attention in this incredible volume.

The book is huge and comes in its own keepsake box, which helps protect it from the curiosity of my cat!

This book is nothing less than astounding. The sheer SIZE of it is mind boggling. The weight is something to contend with. With the book flat on my lap, I need a cushion next to me to rest the open pages...
The print quality is amazing and many of the animation cell pictures look utterly real. I had to touch the Three little pigs page to see if it was actually printed on acetate in two layers!
A minor gripe - being 64 with eyes not as great as they once were, the printed text is very small but it doesn't stop me giving this awesome book 5 stars. It will take an age to read and appreciate the 600+ pages.
