About a week ago, we bought a couple of small trees and put them in the ground. My son saw them and mentioned that the year before he had planted a tree that died when rabbits ate the bark. So we went back to the nursery and they recommend WEC's Vinyl Tree Guard. Two trees--two minutes per tree! Obviously, I won't know for a while if they will work, but it seems as if a rabbit would have to be awfully strong and determined to do any damage to the tree. I think they're a find.

How do I know? Well I used the brown paper stuff for the past 4 years. Then I found this. It's great! Easier, better for the tree and its reusable. The one cation is pay attention to the size from 2 regards - 1) it's intended for smaller trunks - I'd say up to 1.5" diameter 2) it's relatively short. If you need more than 2' of coverage get more than 1!

I got these to protect newly planted, and small, trees from roaming cats that like to use small tree trunks as scratching posts. These tree guards did the trick. These guards also wrap loosely around the trunk and allow the trunk to breath, which is great. Mind you, these are intended for small trees since the guards are only 2 feet long. The tree guards do one thing and they do it well. I'm happy.

I got this to protect the trunks of young fruit trees when using the weed whacker. The plastic is so flimsy it doesn't stand up to a string trimmer. I got some from a different manufacturer (Rubbermaid?) at Home Depot that seem to hold up much better.

I got them to help with deer, but the deer just wipe them off with their antlers. So I was hoping to avoid damage but the guards did not help.
The measurement of the guards, BTW, is from end to end and when spiraled they are much shorter so take that into consideration so I needed several to cover the tree. Even though I wrapped them with overlapping ends the deer dug in and half went up and half went down - if the piece had been longer perhaps it would have been more useful.

Since it's a wrap it will go around any size tree (though you will need to use more for larger trees). We bought these fall to keep the rabbits from chewing the bark on our apple trees over the winter. So far no nibbles.

These tree guards are ideal for protecting young trees from deer antlers. One package was just enough for three 1-2 year old peach trees. So much easier to use than the heavy mesh guards, which are cumbersome to cut and position on small trees. These wrapping guards are especially great for getting around low branches on young trees. Highly recommended to save your tender young trees from being destroyed by deer rubbing their antlers on the bark in fall and winter.
