Having travelled quite a bit to some pretty primitive spots I understood their motivation.
I loved reading of their many exploits, especially interacting with the locals. For the most part they were great. As I lived my own adventures in a foreign culture I happily compared theirs. Mike told it like it was which I appreciated. I've had some like experience, but for a mostly stay at bone audience, The Wander Year will be quite eye opening, and very much enjoyed. Might even give you an idea of what you just might want to do some day soon.
Here's what I didn't like: I felt like most chapters scratched the surface of the awesomeness of what the author saw and experienced. I would have liked a little more emotional connection. The summary at the end of the book provided this, would have liked to see a bit more.
Be advised: this book does read like a series of articles. Don't be shocked by this. I was reading a few reviews that complained about this, however this style is addressed up front.
I downloaded this book from Pixel of Ink on a free promotion, but it was a book I would pay for. I am interested in reading the author's other travel book.
I found this book enjoyable for someone like me who has heard of these places, is considering travelling to a lot of them but has never been. The chapters are short and sweet and while its very obvious you are not getting a full blow by blow account of the entire journey its easy to pick up and put down as needed.
I agree with other reviews that this would not appeal to a very well travelled person - but if you are just starting to dip your toes into the world you could do a lot worse than this book!
