About me: I have tried and used 10 different IP cams over the years (google "marc merlins linuxha webcams"). I use them primarily with the open source zoneminder. You'll find the magic URLs you can use with this camera if you need them for 3rd party software.
Update: The Wansview support contact actually wrote a new firmware after I asked them about better support without a windows plugin. They now have a firmware that works with windows plugin, or with flash (the flash version works fine on linux).
I also need to state that I have worked with Wansview support and engineering by reporting problems and improvements they could do, and they have been very responsive. Several improvements in this camera firmware are a direct result of my interaction with them and they deserve clear credit for listening to consumers and improving their product where they can.
I now avoid foscam because of all the fake 5 star reviews they put on amazon their products while continuing to have bad firmware issues and a sub-standard web interface that does not work with all browsers. Foscam has also repeatedly ignored my Emails with bug reports and suggestions.
The older version of this camera only worked with an active-X plugin, but now it also works with adobe flash on all platforms, and you can also simply retrieve a jpeg from it via an http get link.
It can also be made to work with linux simply with: vlc rtsp://192.168.205.166/live/ch0 (or use ch1 and ch2 for lower resolution)
My web page also shows the configuration options to make it work with zoneminder 1.28 (google it as explained above)
Second good news, wansview support replied to me and gold me the hidden URL to get jpegs from any browser and/or feed them to security software, is /mjpeg/snap.cgi?chn=0 o (you need firmware 41, or a patch from wansview support to get proper Content-Type: image/jpeg headers whne you pull jpegs)
I found that the camera also works with my multi camera android app "IP Camera Viewer" if I configure it as NCM-624GA/625GA (including moving the camera around).
The picture quality is very good although you will get some barrel effect. The web interface is not browser independent like the Zavio camera (Zavio F3210 has the best interface I've seen so far, but costs twice as much), but now that it works with flash, that's really good enough, for again, an unbeatable price.
Please change the default password on your device. You can do this either through the smartphone app or via the web browser interface. The other really important piece of information about security, imho, is that you should disable the P2P function. I didn't even know what this was until I started digging. Essentially, this functionality allows you (or anyone else possibly) to connect to your camera from outside of your local network ... i.e. the whole wide world. This is very convenient for those who want to sneak a peak from work but leaves a potential huge door open for malicious spying. Not only does this allow connections from outside your network but it somehow bypasses your firewall -- pretty scary. You cannot disable P2p without first installing a little tool the company provides. I commend Wansview for providing the tool but you should be able to disable this service through the web portal. The tool can be found at the bottom of this page: [...]
If you want to be able to access your camera remotely you can do port forwarding on your router. You should set the default port as something other than port 80 ... which is the default web port. I also encourage you to not use the built in DDNS service. If you need DNS service got to a reputable company.
I should also mention that I think this camera is a great value and it works great with zone minder!
The camera's set up was pretty easy. And, at first, when connected to my router via Ethernet, the camera worked well and had good image quality. It wasn't until I tried to get it to work over WiFi that I had a problem. It took a few tries to establish the WiFi connection. Once I managed to do it, all I would see was a black screen. I went online to the support pages. The documentation isn't the best and didn't cover my specific issue. But I was able to make enough sense of it to try to get the cam working. Several reboots and app crashes later, I installed a third party webcam app on my laptop. I finally managed to get an image through the pc app. After that, the Wansview Android app started working, as well - sort of. It would occasionally freeze or crash. Making sure that this wasn't a fluke, I disconnected and then reconnected to the camera. This took a few tries. But again, the Android app continued to freeze and crash.
While I am able to, I shouldn't have to work around the connectivity issue, and the instability of the Android app is a deal breaker. I will be returning this product.
