Although the main character, Red, is extremely strong and very sarcastic, I can tell that she has just been hardened by this cruel world that she has found herself. She is willing to shoot and ask questions later because that is how you have to survive in this world. It’s fitting but it does take a bit of a toll when she meets Trace. She’s so hardened and so distrusting that she is putting everyone at a distance, and although I cannot blame her I still want for her to have these human moments. I mean otherwise why live? Isn’t acting like a zombie synonymous with pretty much being a zombie?
But, just as I was about to give up on her some things come out and the plot thickens, quite a bit! There are more characters introduced, more drama, more zombies, and more craziness! And although this ends on a cliff hanger I really liked where it ended. It was like a chapter of Red’s life closed and she’s ready for the next, no matter how terrifying.
The one downside is the timing. I could not place how much time had passed, nor could I understand what ages the characters were. I also listened on Audible and although the narrator was very good I think it took away from the story a bit. By the thick Southern accent it was hard to place ages. Easy to place sarcasm though!
I normally avoid all things YA. Zombies don't really hold any appeal for me and Western Romance seemed more for my mama's generation. So why I even picked this book up I really don't know. I know I was in a reading slump and was looking for something out of my norm. This appeared somewhere in my search, it was free and had good reviews so I picked it up. Truthfully, I didn't expect to make it beyond a few chapters.
Surprise!!!!! I couldn't put it down. I read it from beginning to end in one day! I was blown away. It was so much more than I expected. I loved the characters. No immature, whiny teenagers here. Both the H/h were strong, independent and interesting.
The story kept me well entertained. It has good doses of humor, action, suspense, romance and of course, some Zombie gore. I laughed, I teared up and my heart raced. I love when a story elicits a wide range of emotion from me.
I have since purchased the next two books in the series and can't wait to see where they will take me.
Thank you Angela Scott for taking me on an unexpected ride.
