When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. Clearly a comic book, in live action, in all respects. The outlandish action sequences, the one-dimensional characters, the failure of even severe injuries to affect the good guys, the physics-defying effects (like bullets moving in curved trajectories), the rapid turn around from a supreme nebbish into a hero of the galaxy. But despite it all, the film is lots of fun, in the same way you can get a guilty pleasure from a good action comic. Acting? Well, no real acting to speak of. No characters to develop. But it all fits together into a fun couple hours.

Very loosely based on Mark Millar and JG Jones' gritty comic book mini-series, WANTED tells of Wesley Gibson's transformation from pathetic cubicle rat to astounding super-assassin. Angelina Jolie (looking predictably sexylicious) plays the mysterious Fox, who helps recruit Wesley into the Fraternity, a one-thousand-year-old, very select brotherhood of assassins.

It seems that Wesley, prone to crippling anxiety attacks, is the son of a master assassin and that he has inherited his father's supernormal aptitude for killing. Wesley's attacks aren't really caused by anxiety. Rather, those are the moments when his senses go into overdrive, when his heart pulsates to an excess of four hundred beats per minute and his perception and reflexes are boosted to extraordinary levels. In such a state, Wesley can accomplish wondrous things, not the least of which is shooting the wings off a fly. This, he demonstrates (very much to his surprise) at the behest of Sloan, the Fraternity leader.

Gone over to the dark side (but he prefers to think of it as freeing himself from the shackles of mediocrity), Wesley quickly enough signs on with the Fraternity (where each member shares his talents). A key incentive is that the secretive group numbered his father as a member. And learning that his father was murdered by a rogue Fraternity agent, Wesley is determined to avenge him. But, first things first. Wesley is subjected to a brutal training regimen; then he has to prove himself. So he's assigned a target. And then another...

WANTED may have ended up veering off the original source by a ways, but it does stay true in one sense: this film is just about the opposite of a superhero flick. Going against the superhero grain was a goal which Mark Millar and JG Jones successfully pulled off in their comic book series. This movie is nasty and pessimistic and dark, and plenty of things are unbelievable about it. But so what? It's also damn entertaining, right from the adrenalin-pumping opening sequence. The protagonists (Wesley and Fox) aren't really "good guys." The Fraternity to which they belong does come up with a reason-to-be for its existence (some mumbo-jumbo about these folks being "necessity's assassins," eliminating targets presented by Fate to balance the world). It's a fairly nebulous reason, and the Loom of Fate does come off as a silly contrivance ("Do you make sweaters or do you kill people?").

I wouldn't go so far as to call the violence visceral, but there are some pretty brutal scenes here, as when Wesley is being "instructed" by the Butcher and the Repairman. I would call the action sequences breathtaking and spectacular and stylized. And is there anything cooler than a curving bullet?

The cast is top-notch. Angelina Jolie is an actress who can really act, but who truly shines in these action roles. She just brings that attitude and charisma. As Fox, Jolie is mean and vicious and glorious. The girl simply does her thing with style. And, oh, that wicked smile. James McAvoy displays a flawless American accent and is pretty good. I've always thought there's a realness to this guy, from the moment I saw him in a supporting role in WIMBLEDON, and this grounding quality of his comes in handy when portraying Wesley's remarkable transformation. Then there's Morgan Freeman, lending calm gravitas to the screen even as he embarks into a more sinister realm with his character Sloan. I don't think I've ever heard Morgan Freeman cussing before.

I did like the first half slightly better than the second. It fascinated me, watching Wesley develop from a bullied weakling to a confident smiter of dudes. I guess I got off on the little revenge moments, as when he gets his back from his cheating girlfriend and his erstwhile best friend. Wesley's rant against his fat supervisor, though, may have been too mean.

So the cool premise gets to you. The very implausible story draws you in. But WANTED, above all else, is a wicked visual treat, an ideal, over-the-top summer flick. Me, I soaked in the attitude, marveled at the sheer audacity of it all. And, damn, if I'm not in love with Angelina Jolie, all over again. I wouldn't say no to a sequel.

Manipulation betrayal and corruption are the themes of Wanted

Wanted is about a group of assassins called The Fraternity. The story stars James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson who is contacted by the group’s leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) and told that a man named Cross (Thomas Kretschmann) killed his father and he should seek revenge. Wesley is matched up with Fox (Angelina Jolie) who mentors him in the art of killing. The story ultimately comes down to manipulation, betrayal and the corruption that comes along with power.

The movie begins with a big shoot out action scene featuring Cross, but what really draws you in is McAvoy’s character. Wesley is the most unlikeliest person to be recruited by a group of murderers. He’s insecure, has panic attacks, and has an inferiority complex marked by him constantly apologizing to everyone. He’s literally afraid of life as shown by the opening shots of him at work. The first half of the film is taken up by his training which takes a long time because he’s scared of nearly everything.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty more action sequences. Those are very exciting. The film came up with a bullet twist for The Fraternity and Cross which was very original. The action is also well thought out and choreographed such as when Cross is chasing Wesley and Fox. She flips their car over a bunch of police while Wesley says “I’m sorry” to them via the sunroof.

Wanted also gives motivation for the Fraternity. Sloan says it is carrying out fate in executing people. Fox gets more personal saying that her father was brutally murdered and if a member of the Fraternity had carried out their orders that would have never happened. She makes the argument that they are eliminating bad people and carrying out justice where none is had. The true meaning of the Fraternity is revealed at the end.

All together Wanted works on all levels. The characters and the Fraternity are interesting. The action is top notch. You can’t discuss the themes without spoiling the story so you just have to watch it to figure them out. There’s even a twist at the end and Freeman gets to deliver one of the great and profane speeches in film.

Played out in highly detailed SloMo, the Fraternity are a "hidden in plain sight" organisation, eliminating those who will destabalise the general equalibrium of day-to-day life and the overarching power struggles within our society.

An assassin's right of passage mixed with major and minor twists and a bunch of who can outdo the other the best. Its fast paced, and very entertaining. 18 rated. Some poorly thoughtout undercurrents that drive the whole story. But overall a good detatched from reality shoot'em up.
