This book states it is "a guide to battlefields and historic sites". It is a companion to a PBS series on the War of 1812; it contains chapters on the 7 theaters of the war from the northwest to the southern. All are explained well and in an interesting fashion, much like and in the style of a script to the documentary. There are period paintings and maps and photos of those in period costume today. An index is included.

For most sites there are a few sentences, "what you will see today". There is a brief description, but little in the way of guidance or directions. This is really not a guidebook in a travel sense. It is a good history - a guide of a little known war - prepared for its centennial. It shows you its history; but it is not what I was expecting as a guidebook, or that I think most people would expect, that they could use to seek out places to see and visit.

This book arrived on the day before predicted. I am researching an ancestor who is said to have served in the War of 1812. This book is great for the large picture and describes what the battle sites look like if visited today. This helps me in my search.

This is an outstanding book of facts. We went on a summer trip and followed the war of 1812, during the bicentenial. this book led me to places to visit. It is perfect for someone that wants to visit these sites, with a good understanding what happeden in history.

In general this is a good overview of the War of 1812. I especially like how the book covers the various theatres of the war, something I never got when I studied the War of 1812 in school. My one complaint however is on pages 159-160 when discussing the Battle of North Point it is stated of the British troops, "The Majority of Brooke's troops were regulars, some of whom had fought under Wellington at Waterloo." Although many of the troops that the British shipped over to America to fight in 1814 were veterans of the Napoleonic Wars none of them were veterans of Waterloo since that battle had not yet happened. The Battle of North Point occured on September 12, 1814 whereas the Battle of Waterloo happened on June 18, 1815. Now, it is possible some of the British soldiers that were at North Point served later at Waterloo, (the 95th Rifles served at New Orleans in January 1815 and also fought at Waterloo five months later,) but the book makes it sound like Waterloo happened before the Cheaspeake Campaign.
