The story of War Brothers is gripping. It not only holds you, it pulls you into the story of a Ugandan boy from a wealthly family who gets kidnapped from his school by the LRA. He and his friends become child-soliers forced to fight with the LRA or die.
McKay's writing style is always interesting, there is never a lull in the action. The characters are well developed.
It is an all-around excellently written book about a serious subject.
I would recommend War Brothers to teens and adults. Warning: the storyline gets heavy at times, descibing inhuman treatment of children and the horrors of war though the story is one of hope.
You will be powerfully and positively impacted by this book.
This is a very hard to read book. It deals with lots of violence, child soldiers, life in a war torn country. The disparity between rich and poor, and ultimately being true to yourself, standing up for your beliefs, and the importance of friendship and family.
It deals with several young boys abducted from their school by soldiers, who use fear and brutality to force the kids to do their bidding.
The themes are mature and there is violence, but it is not overly graphic or gratuitous. Rather, this book shows the reality of life as a child soldier. The book is fictitious, but very very real.
