Before reading this book, I had no idea how much dogs contributed to our war effort or how many lives they saved. This book really taps into the spiritual nature and intuitive sense and amazing intelligence of dogs.
It points out (one of hundreds of fascinating facts) that the Viet Cong had tremendous respect for these dogs and their ability, and the VC made the dogs a priority target because they were such a threat.
Every handler says things like "our dog saved the lives of every man in the platoon that night..."
It covers dogs in war from World War I (1918) to Desert Storm (1990's).
Dogs in WWI were used as messengers and to find the dead and wounded on the battlefield. The US government even made gas masks for dogs, which was quite challenging, because dogs pant to give off heat and the masks had to be designed to compensate for that unique attribute.
"War Dogs" also points out that dogs have the capacity to sniff out land mines with a greater factor of reliability than modern equipment.
The stories are well written and you will never look at a dog the same way again.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Astonishing stories about military working dogs...rare, compelling photographs...a fascinating piece of history."
"War Dogs tells the fascinating, bittersweet story of our unsung animal heroes. It is a poignant tribute to the fifty thousand canine soldiers who have served our country, often at the expense of their own lives."
"Once I started reading War Dogs, I couldn't put it down. Finally a book has been written to honor our K9 heroes. Anyone who loves dogs should buy this book."
"For those interested in dogs and American military history, this book is a must. Like the tent, the military dog has never become obsolete. Lemish's accounts of the ups and downs of our military dog programs and our GIs' personal experiences with their dogs make this book fascinating reading."

This is an intelligent and thoughtful treatment of a subject that goes to the heart of the ancient dog-human relationship. While there are many wonderful stories of war-dog heroism in this book, its greatest and unique contribution is its overall look at our use of dogs in wars since World War I. The book is compassionate without being sentimental, and historical without getting caught up in military jargon or minutiae. The writing is clear, straightforward, and fluid--it is a pleasure to read, and re-read. As an aminal writer, I have found it a valuable resource. The information is thorough and well documented, though never dry. You will be infuriated by some of the harebrained schemes the military (in the far-away upper levels) has cooked up over the years and touched by the depth of the caring that the trainers, veterinarians, and especially the handlers had, and continue to have, for their dogs. A wonderful book and a must for every serious student of the dog-human relationship.

I am a "Dog Lover" to be certain. And I'm a very enthusiastic student of "working dogs." I guide bird hunts on weekends (mostly upland birds with a lab...during season of course) and I occasionally work with Law Enforcement dogs as well.
So perhaps I'm biased. Maybe my love of dogs in general, and working dogs in particular has clouded my judgement. So with that disclaimer stated I really enjoed this book. Seeing the development of "war dogs" throughout history is fascintating to me.
If your sole interest is military history, you may not have enough here to really keep you interested. BUT if, like me, you're also interested in dogs or workings dogs? This book is excellent!

I gave this book as a Christmas present to an 88 year old library director who has read quite a few books in his life. He enjoyed the stories, but said that the writing style of the author was somewhat laborious i.e. he tended to drag on a bit. This detracted a bit from an otherwise interesting read. Grandpa's overall sentiment was that it was "OK" so I give this book 3-stars on the Gramps Scale, which is probably the most authoritative book rating anyone can get.

War Dogs deserves credit for great attention to details about events that took place in the different Wars and Conflicts. Too many facts, dates, names, and events are given one after the other, so much, that you loose the more intimate stories of different people and dogs in the shuffle of over whelming information. The author certainly did his research, but it would have been an easier read if the book focused on personal stories, with footnotes on details.

Great book. The training of military dogs has evolved considerably since WW1 and 2. This book is a great help in examining details on the early programs and initiatives taken by the US military. There were plenty of mistakes made in the early days, but that should not take away from the well-intentioned individuals who recognized the canine's capacity to serve in wartime. Read this and then read K9 Warriors for a fuller perspective on how far military working dogs have come.
