Dennis lost his wife and part of one of his legs in the war. He’s depressed and suffers from PTSD. On his last time in the hospital, he met Tucker, and the two have been best friends ever since. Tucker was also wounded in the war. He has terrible nightmares of some of the missions he was on. They are each other’s support along with some really good family and friends.
I think what I loved most about this book was how believable everything was. A lot of times you read these types and it’s either a dealing of symptoms with a bland story or it’s overly dramatic. Andria Large found the perfect balance. Not only of a veteran’s journey in civilian life but also with everyday family and friend issues. I really loved Dennis’s sister Lissette, and Tucker’s friend Duke is amazing.
This is a second edition. I read the first and liked it very much. This one though, I love. The changes she’s made has everything flowing so much smoother. Plus, it makes the interactions with other characters a lot more realistic. This is the kind of book that I look for. A story you can really dive into with characters you fall in love with and a few you actually hate. At times they had me laughing, especially Duke. Other times I was crying though some of those were happy tears. I look forward to reading many more of Andria’s books knowing I’m going to enjoy to the very last page. It has an ending you are happy with even while you’re sad to finish the book. I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of this ARC. This is an honest opinion of the book.
“From War to Forever “is a standalone novel, published in 2015 at KDP under the title “At War” as part of a trilogy.
Tucker and Dennis are combat Marines who met in therapy and are friends/roommates when the book begins. Dennis was unable to save his wife, a reporter who was captured. Plus, he lost part of his leg in combat. Tucker has lost his hearing. Both lost friends. Nevertheless, the men are well enough to hold employment, Tucker in an office and Dennis (despite his prosthesis) as security at a bar.
When Dennis falls into a deep depression, unable to date or move on from his wife’s death, the men realize they really only find comfort from one another’s touch. They are equally shocked as lust slowly emerges from friendship to love.
But this is where the storyline begins. It creates a meandering arc, much like life, with expected and unexpected occurrences that create relationship difficulties, conflicts and opportunities. At first psychological issues predominate, then physical health, and finally social pressures. And each step creates choices whether to deepen, or pull back from trust, between Dennis and Tucker as well as with family and friends.
While the sizzle level is high, Dennis and Tucker’s intimacy is consistently driven by their needs. In so doing, Andria depicts the comprehensive transitions combat Vets might endure, in order to emerge with complete hearts.
Large’s attention to the details of human experience keeps readers glued. For example, she accurately captures glances, how they differ between friends, lovers, and siblings. The deliciously nasty humor of male banter carefully demonstrates their affection, while the kidding between brother and sister, though equally wicked, is written completely differently.
At each moment, Andria seems to strike the right note, each emotion true. Even as readers can predict characters’ foolish decisions we know we’d make similar ones. And when the characters take courageous steps, we can’t help but root for them.
For a thoroughly engaging, open-hearted look at love, with all its foibles, “From War to Forever“ is a great read.
I really loved this storyline and I absolutely adored these characters. They shared an amazing chemistry and love. Though neither has been attracted to a man before, I really love that they didn't question it all that much. It didn't freak them out, they just accepted how they felt for one another, how their feelings changed from friends to more and they explored that attraction and let it happen. The connection they shared was so raw and beautiful and you could feel the love coming off the pages at you.
As much as I loved this book, it was entirely too long. The author/editor could have cut at least 1/3 of this book and still tell a beautiful and complete love story. There were a lot of unnecessary fillers in the story. Now let's talk about the sex, I love sex in books, and as much as it was was beyond hot every time Denny and Tucker fell into one another's arms, it was too much sex. It got to a point that it was just sex for the sake of sex, and a little of that in a story is okay, but here, it went overboard.
All in all, this was a wonderful love story, filled with friendship, family, heartache, healing and love. Highly recommendable!!
