Ok book, glad I read it.

This was one of the few books that i've read that have covered the Italian campaign AFTER the fall of Rome. It wasn't a bad book at all but wasn't a great book really either. I felt the author was trying to give a very detailed account of the big picture while trying to interject many stories of inidivudal people. It's an approach to writing history that i'm sure many people enjoy, it's not my preferable method. Cornelius Ryan in his books use the stories of hte people to drive the big picture, but in this book the big picture seems to be an excuse to justify all these small little tidbits of battle.

Also, i wish the maps werent at the end of the book, but sprinkled in the text. I wasn't even aware there were maps until i got to the end of the book on the kindle, i guess i should have looked at the table of contents a little better.

I would have given this book 4 stars, I still liked the book even if i didn't always like his method of presenting the information, but the conversion to a kindle format was really cheaply done. So many errors, especially when a word was hyphnated (i would assume) in the text version, in the kindle version you always seemed to still get the hyphanted version followed by the full word. I would have preferred a much more professional conversion to a kindle format.

How successfully to fight a war with what you have.

A good look at the “forgotten theatre” of World War II. Makes me wish again that Lucian Truscott could have been the commander of Fifth Army from D-day in Italy. If only Mark Clark’s jeep had run over a mine!

With a shortage of troops, a polyglot command, Truscott managed to outgeneral some very good German commanders, and always, very inventive in his approach to problems. The way he used the 10th Mountain, that odd-ball unit that no one wanted! Could anyone else have persuaded the Poles to soldier on after Yalta? The way he got along with the Brits. Utilized the brilliant skills of the Nisei, and even stuck with the best troops of an underperforming black division. With a few more divisions, he probably could have broken through and thrust into the Balkans as Churchill always hoped the Allies might do .

The monograph details the campaign through Northern Italy after the capture of Rome in June of 1944, just prior to the D-Day invasion in Normandy on June 6th. It is heavily skewed to the effort of the 10th US Mountain Division because the author served with that unit. However there is enough ovreview detail of the other Division, Regimental and Battlaion-sized untis in the theater to give a good account of operations in the final year of the war.

If you served with the 10th Mountain, then or later, this is a good unit history to expand your knowledge of your old unit. As for the other 10-12 Divisions in the Italian campaign, you should search for books specifically covering those units. The library at the Army War College in Carlisle Barrack, PA has a section of researchers who can provide additional leads for your search-- upon request.

An engaging story of battle action north of Rome

This book is the most comprehensive operational account of the battle for Northern Italy that I've found. Much of the battle action is between the Arno and Po Rivers. On the German side is the 10th and 14th Armies defending the high ground against the Allies. The two main Allies but not the only Allies were the US 5th Army and the British 8th Army. The book covers the last eleven months of the war and while the fighting north of Rome wasn't quite as bad as Salerno, Anzio, Rapido River, Cassino and the rest of the Gustav Line, it was still a slow, costly struggle.

Though the main theme is operational, its not a really dry affair for the author weaves, though not deeply, the lives of many soldiers, officers and civilians into his story. The author who was a veteran wrote this book as a tribute to the fallen, trying to describe the ordeal the ground troops endured in this costly battle and does an admirable job of it. While there is some mention of Operations Overlord and Dragoon which stole the thunder from the Italian Front and some mention of the political and command decisions, its secondary.

There are 29 photos and 5 maps. The first map is of the Mediterranean with Italy in the center. The next map drills down to just the northern half of Italy, from Rome to the border. The next three maps cover the fighting between Florence and Bologna. The maps were OK but there was room for improvement. There should also have been more maps depicting the individual axes of advance instead of showing the entire width of Italy. There is an impressive Bibliography if further reading is desired and a useful Index.

The author does a good job, though perhaps with less flair of Atkinson, of providing comprehensive battle coverage for both sides while weaving many anecdotal Allied experiences into the story. This book begins where many books end with the liberation of Rome and continues to the end of the war and as such would make a fine supplement to your library.

A hard slog

Although reading this account is not as dangerous as it was to slog under fire up the muddy slopes of Tuscany, the task may be just as arduous. For the most part, this is a largely impersonal, undigested catalog of locations and unit names and numbers--all in need of a step back, synthesis, and insights. Providing something of the human experience might have greatly enhanced this data dump.
