Format: Hardcover
War/Photography: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath is a monumental work on an important and fascinating subject. From images of the Mexican American War in 1846 to the current conflict in Afghanistan, this impressive ten pound tome (615 pages) takes the reader on a visual journey of combat photojournalism that encompasses the entire history of photography from the daguerreotype to digital. There are plenty of other classic treatments of war photography, but this work differs in its ability to bring new and current photographic work to the reader as well as examine the other side of war that is often overlooked in those other volumes, namely the effect of war on civilians, (especially children) as well as the dark underbelly of war, executions and prisoners. The large format, while intimidating to grasp, allows for faithful, high quality reproductions of these now iconic images.

Of particular note was the inclusion of a large number of photographs from the archives of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The pioneering work by C.E.W. Bean is often overlooked by modern historians and it was nice to see that he was finally receiving the recognition he so richly deserves.

This book complements the current exhibition on display at Washington DC's Corcoran Gallery of Art (on view until September 29, 2013) Buy this book here on Amazon as you will not only save 30% but believe me, you do not want to carry this home from downtown. For those of you that have had the luck to see the exhibit, the book is a must have addition to fully understand and comprehend the subject matter. The well written chapters in the book expand upon and illuminate the back stories of some of the most recognizable images in the history of the medium.

Ten years of research went into the show and this book. It tells the story of war in an objective a way as possible and it is done by subject matter not by a timeline. For both lovers of photography and those interested in the subject of war. There really is nothing else like it. And it really has something for everyone. It covers every emotion from humor to sadness. It is tough in parts but is is worth the effort. I believe that in time this will go down in history as one of the truly great photography books.

This is a monumental book which covers all aspects of war photography, from it's beginnings to the present. It also covers much more than the actual armed conflict- topics such as recovery from injury, how families are affected, propaganda, etc. are covered. I saw the exhibition at The Corcoran Gallery in D.C- it was massive and powerful.
This is a large, very heavy book (beautifully printed) and as is typical Amazon threw it in a box with a couple" pillows" in it. Fortunately it arrived in perfect shape, but check it when it comes for corners, etc. The potential for damage was high.

I own several substantial photo books about various wars, but this one in particular is quite powerful and all-inclusive. The photos are terrific and the write-up is really superb; it's very impressive all-around. The book's heft might give you a hernia - but in all seriousness, I highly recommend this book.

If you live in the NYC metro area, the photo exhibit for this book will be at the Brooklyn Museum through February 2.

Wonder what war time photographers do? This book is an amazing collection of unseen pictures that tell harsh stories. War is never good, so much suffering. But it makes me humble. This is a heavy book, very detailed in text and pictures.
