Even though I'm French, and as such, not very much aware of the going-ons during the Civil War, I had great pleasure finding out all those little details interspersed in the otherwise not-so-classical romance story, the characters are anything but plain and archetypal, neither heroes, nor anti-heroes. Maybe it's not a popular stand, but I personally enjoy stories with such thoroughly human characters, lovable right down to their most irritating shortcomings.
I'd say that this story combines what I love the most in literature: social, historical and psychological accuracy, and a bold impressionist/naturalist style.
I had bought it to have something nice to read in the bus on my way to work. I ended up reading it overnight. I can't wait for the printed copy to come out, so I can bookmark all my favorite passages as I do for all my favorite novels.

Story deals with real experiences that occured during the civil war but mainly is a romance story. Deals with a woman facing not only the horrors of war but her husband deserting her and losing her children as well. The author did such an awesome job bringing out the emotions of all the characters. Storyline flowed smoothly and kept me captivated until the very end

Loved the story! Shows what can happen to two people who thought they were in love for (I think) it was seven years but something happens, or doesn't, happen and the marriage ends up in a divorce. Whew! Danny, or Daniella really leads a few of the characters on a wild chase! At first she seemed to be made of really strong stuff but as time went by and circumstances arose, rather than get stronger, she seemed to weaken. I guess when she wasn't able to obtain her youngest son. I want to believe she got stronger when Jack was able to get him back for her, and that in itself is another story! Wow! She was pretty strong when she gave birth to her daughter,Bella Alice. The author could write a sequel about Danny's first husband covering the desolvement of their marriage and how he met his mistress/wife and her pregnancy and did he really spend that three years in a confederate prison AFTER the war!? Well, I'm not going to say any more about THIS story! You're gonna have to buy the story yourself.. I recommend this book!

I enjoyed War Torn. The story got me hooked right from the beginning, making me concerned with Daniella's family struggles. The romance of the main characters was my favorite part, but I also enjoyed the Civil War history part of the story too. The author really was able to show Daniella's desperation at a time when women needed to be the strength of their families but were treated as people with little or no rights. I would recommend this to anyone that likes romance novels.

Daniella's husband, William, a surgeon, has joined the Union army and left the family in Independence, Missouri. After coming home on leave, he sends a letter, announcing to Daniella that he wants a divorce, he has a mistress and she's expecting a child. Some time later, he comes home, intent upon taking their sons to Baltimore to live with him and his mistress. Really, this is the story of the personal battle between them. The Civil War is the backdrop, but not terribly important to the story. Well written and engaging, but not terribly outstanding. That said, I would read this author again.

War Torn, very appropriately named, tells of the chaos of a family’s splitting apart and eventual coming together in a new way that is a perfect metaphor for the Civil War, the backdrop for this novel. A compelling love story, as well as a shocking recounting of certain events that happened during the war, especially affecting women, War Torn was such a fascinating read, I read it twice and may read it again one of these days. I appreciated the author’s attention to historical details in just the right proportion to the story of love lost and found. Let’s hope this isn’t the last we read from Hadley R. Mann.

I don't usually read this genre, and I don't usually write reviews from books I read, but this one was quite good (and I have to say, for a new author and a kindle book, not a ton of annoying typos and grammar issues like some have). Good read- hope to see more of the same! Characters made you want to keep reading
